Like the Sunset

In early summer
When the premature warm air circled us
As we sat upon the bleachers
In an open football field
We watched the sun set behind a cream colored building
And ran across the artificial grass
Laughing
Under the fading sun
Now I sit here on my own
On those same silver bleachers
That have slightly dulled within the span of a couple months
Cold air creeping up on my neck
As I watch the sun set by myself
Its colors not as bold and vibrant
As the orange fades and the black of the night
Surrounds me like the stars

You walk here with your new lover
I've seen you from time to time
And you hold her as you watch the sun grow faint
Behind the glistening goal post
As you witness one day ending
And a beautiful night beginning
With someone new
And I sit here wondering
if the sun held by the sky
relates to my disappearance in your embrace
As it slowly falls away from the sky
and goes down behind that same cream colored building

Certain things
are just so hard
To watch fade away.
