When I was younger I thought
When you fall in love, it's beautiful
It's everything you ever wanted
It's just like the movies:
Perfect but turbulent
And if it ended, sure, it hurts
But you move on and lose your love for them
Forgetting the details
The memories fading from the mind
And when
I met you, I held this all to be true
And as I fell in love with you, I realized that
so far I had predicted love
and all of its corners
But what I had not prepared for was after you
What I was not ready for was the end
When you left, I was shattered
And still, I thought I would move on and stop loving you
Like a switch to the living room ceiling fan
But what I have realized now
Is that no matter how many years pass
And no matter who I meet or what I do
No matter how much we both change and grow
I will always love you.
Before, I thought new love came like the first one:
Out of nowhere, pure, powerful, all or nothing
But second love is never as special as the first, where your eyes are opened and you taste what the connection is all about
New love may cover up the first love
But it will never erase it
And now I am here, a year later
Reflecting on you, my first for so much
And I love you
I am afraid I always will
