"Babe?" Phoenix stuck her head into the bedroom, where Chris had been waiting patiently for her on the bed for the last half an hour as she finished up her makeup.
Chris watched as Phoenix approached him, not once taking his eyes off of her. He could hardly believe how absolutely radiating she looked. "I umm- you look... wow! I'm speechless."
Phoenix stood in between his legs before wrapping her arms around his neck. She then rested her forehead against his and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
"You are so fucking beautiful." He complimented.
"So are you." She replied honestly. "Are you ready to go?"
Chris nodded. "What exactly is this again?"
"It's a launch party for a brand I'm working with right now." She answered while slicking back Chris's hair. "I keep forgetting you haven't been to one of these events with me."
Because of the success of her vlogging channel, Phoenix had been getting lucrative offers from brands wanting to collaborate as well as invites to product launches and other events. She usually brought her cousin Gwen with her but decided to bring Chris instead this time. She thought it'd be nice for him to see her in her element but also to just hangout with him in a setting that she would bring a friend to. If she wanted him to get back to best friend status, she too had to put in the work.
"Will they have booze?"
"Ever wonder why I come home from these things fucking wasted? There's almost ALWAYS an open bar." Phoenix replied. "I can't even remember the last time we got wasted together. Maybe tonight will be the night."
As if instinctively, Chris ran his hand across Phoenix's stomach. In response Phoenix grabbed his wrist, guiding his hand to her hip instead. "Shouldn't you wait a bit just to be sure you're not... erm... Have you gotten your period yet?"
"If I did, you would know."
"Do you think you're... you know...?"
"Pregnant?" She laughed. "Of course not. It's only been like 2 days, Chris and you pulled out, we're fine."
"Not completely." He reminded with a sigh as his mind wandered back to two nights prior.
Making love with Phoenix was one of his favorite things to do because even when they had been fighting or simply not on the same page, it always brought them together. When he was inside of her, nothing else mattered to him and the only thing on his mind was physically showing her how much he loved and respected her. With his mind blank to any responsibilities in the moment, he had almost forgot about the promise he made to her. Because she was always on birth control, he had the luxury of finishing inside her without a worry, even since their very first time; so trying to program his mind and body to do otherwise was tough. Being the man he was, Chris informed Phoenix of his slip up right away; and to his surprise, she didn't seem to mind.
"I'm not pregnant." Phoenix assured.
"Can you just take a test? For me?"
"If it'll make you feel better, of course sweet face."
"I love you." Chris grinned before standing to his feet. He had been formulating a sound argument in his head for when Phoenix said a pregnancy test wouldn't be necessary or that she didn't want to take one so he was definitely surprised when agreed without putting up a fight.
"We'll pass Target on the way. We can stop by and pick up a test." Phoenix suggested. "Also, I love you too."
The car ride from their home to the closest Target was spent listening to the Little Mermaid soundtrack, per Chris's request. Although there wasn't a very high chance that Phoenix was pregnant, all he could think about was how much he couldn't wait to introduce his future child to the same Disney songs and movies he enjoyed with his parents during his youth. There were so many things he wanted to do and experience with his child to give him or her as great of a childhood as he had. He was still convinced that he and Phoenix would have a baby girl when the time came but he would be happy to have a son as well.
When they entered the store, it was virtually empty which worked in their favor. It didn't take long for them to locate the aisle with the pregnancy tests and check out. Because Phoenix forgot her reusable bags at home, she wanted Chris to literally carry all the tests in his arms to avoid the sack "ending up in the ocean" in to which a "sea turtle will ingest it, block their digestive system and eventually die." After a few minutes of arguing about it in front of the cashier, Phoenix finally obliged and allowed him to bag up all the tests. He had hoped nobody was secretly recording their conversation which would inevitably end up on TMZ, as if the fact that they were buying pregnancy tests in the first place wasn't enough of a headline.
"I'll wait for you out here." Chris told Phoenix before she entered Target's family bathroom.
He pulled his NASA baseball cap down farther in an attempt to cover more of his face. The last thing he wanted was to be recognized while he was holding a sack with about 10 different pregnancy tests. While he waited for his girlfriend, his mind was going a million miles a minute. He knew she wasn't ready to be a mother but he also knew that she'd be an amazing one, no matter how much she doubted herself. Regardless of the fact, he would have to agree that now wasn't the time for a surprise pregnancy. With everything that had been going on in their relationship on top of the whole marriage thing, they needed time to sort things out and get to know each other again.
"Chris!" Phoenix whispered after sticking her head out of the bathroom door.
"Are you done?" He asked while approaching the door, opening it wide enough so he could enter before shutting it behind him. "What does it say?"
"We have to wait 3 minutes." She replied.
"Where is it?"
"Up here." Phoenix answered, gesturing toward the side of the sink before she began to wash her hands.
Chris walked over to where she stood so he could get a closer look at the test that could very well change their lives forever. Staring into the window of the test, he couldn't even begin to imagine how he would react if it turned out that Phoenix was pregnant. All he wanted in life was to be a father but not at that very moment.
"I don't think we're supposed to move it." Phoenix spoke as Chris stuck his hand out to pick it up. She looked over at the instruction manual and read it aloud. "Lay the stick on a flat, nonabsorbent surface with the results window facing up."
"I really don't want to be in a target bathroom when we find out whether or not you're pregnant." He shrugged while removing the test from the sink. He stuck it in his pocket, along with the instruction booklet. "By the time we get to the car, it will have been 3 minutes."
"I don't think it's going to be accurate if we don't follow the instructions to a T."
"We have more than enough tests. Just take another one when we get home." He suggested while grabbing his girlfriend's hand and intertwining their fingers. "Let's go."
The walk to the car felt longer than ever as all Chris wanted to do was pull the test out of his pocket and find out if his girlfriend was expecting. While Phoenix stayed relaxed and composed, not an ounce of worry about the results, Chris was driving himself crazy with what if's. He couldn't understand why Phoenix wasn't as anxious as him.
When they finally made it to the car, Chris opened Phoenix's door for her per usual and jogged to his side. As soon as he buckled his seatbelt, he pulled the test out of his pocket. He turned it upside down, trying to understand exactly what he was seeing before tilting it toward Phoenix. "What does this mean?"
Phoenix turned on her iPhone's flashlight and pointed it toward the pregnancy test. Her eyes widened as she turned it right side up. "This doesn't make sense! How did this even happen?!"
