"I'M HOME!" Chris announced as he walked into his apartment.
He was immediately shushed by Scott, who was sitting on the couch watching the Vampire Diaries on Netflix.
"Haven't you already seen every episode though?" Chris frowned.
"That's not why I'm shushing you." Scott paused the show before turning back to face his older brother. "Phoenix is sleeping."
"Ahh." He nodded. "Thanks for hanging out with her today."
"Hanging out is a bit of a stretch." Scott mumbled. "She ignored me for half of the day and locked herself in her room at about 3ish."
"She's been in there for 4 hours and you didn't call me?!" Chris questioned, his voice coming out louder than he intended to. "Did she even eat?!"
"God, can't I exaggerate in peace?"
"Not when it comes to my pregnant wife, no."
"Mom brought her food a couple hours ago and only left after Phoenix fell asleep." Scott told him. "She cane to pick up the dogs to get groomed or something and thought Phoenix would be hungry."
"Did you at least-"
"Yes, I put a scoop of unflavored protein powder in her oatmeal this morning." Scott cut his brother off. "I still don't get why that has to be a secret."
"I just wanna make sure she gets enough protein especially seeing as though she's a vegetarian. And if she knew I added protein powder to her food, she wouldn't eat it."
"Your wife is a rather difficult woman, Christopher." Scott spoke after turning off the tv and standing to his feet. He made his way to the front door that Chris left cracked open when he entered.
"I'm well aware, Scott."
"Can't wait to see how much she makes you sweat at mom's thanksgiving dinner next week." Scott joked. "God forbid she doesn't get her allocated serving of protein and vitamins for the day..."
"I already gave mom a list of foods to make for Phoenix." Chris shrugged. "As long as she eats, things will go smoothly."
"I really hope she doesn't just because I wanna see you have a heart attack in the middle of the living room." Scott laughed before pushing the door open to find his brother's mother in law kneeling in front of the apartment behind a line of salt.
"You remember Phoenix's mom?" Chris asked quietly, his foot holding the door open.
"I do." Scott shook her hand. "Nice to see you again Cynthia. I've gotta run though. I'll see you next week Chrissy."
"Impeccable timing." Cynthia smiled. She tucked the rose quartz crystal that was in her hands into her purse and slowly stood up. Chris had given her a call about a week prior explaining how gloomy his wife had been as her pregnancy progressed due to the fact that she wasn't very confident about her ability to deliver the baby. It took her a few days to get her affairs in order so she could come down to Boston but greatly appreciated Chris for reaching out. Upon arriving to their apartment, Cynthia insisted on performing a quick ritual outside of the front door to attract 'positive pregnancy energy' for her daughter. "I just finished."
"Phoenix might still be sleeping." Chris spoke as Cynthia entered his home. He closed and locked the door behind him before leading her to the bedroom.
When the pair entered, they found Phoenix laying peacefully, wearing one of Chris's sweatshirts.
The very first thing Chris did after strolling toward the bed was straighten his pillows before gesturing for his mother in law to make herself comfortable in his spot. He was grateful that the couple's sheets were washed right after they last had sex or else he would've felt terrible about having Cynthia lay down.
