HAZEL SAT BESIDES ANGELINA FOR their Defence Against The Dark Arts lesson and in front of the Weasley twins. She was about to turn round to them when the door flew with a loud bang and Mad-Eye Moody stormed in.

His heavy boots banged on the floorboards as he made his way to the front of the classroom. His glass eye scanning all the faces in front of him. Hazel shifted uncomfortably in her seat when his eyes connected with hers for merely a second.

"You can put those away," Moody growled, "Those books. You won't be needing them."

Hazel shared a confused look with Angelina as the whole class began moving around, placing their books back into their bags, no one even daring to ask why.

"Right then," He said, "I've had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class," His eyes shifted back to Hazel for a moment, "Seems like you've had a pretty thorough grounding in tackling Dark creatures- you've covered Boggarts, Red Caps, Hinkypunks, Grindylows, Kappas, Giants, Obscurials and werewolves, is that right?"

No one dared to say anything, instead the whole class simply nodded their heads.

"But even as sixth years you're still very behind on dealing with curses," Moody stated, "So I'm here to bring you up to scratch on what wizards can do to each other. I've got one year to teach you how to deal with Dark Curses."

Hazel shared a worried look with Angelina before she turned back to share a quick glance with George; he didn't seem to share the same worried glance at the girl though.

"Curses..." Mad-Eye Moody's voice regained Hazel's attention, "They come in many strengths and forms. I'm not only going to tell you the counter-curse for these curses but also show you what they look like. Otherwise, how are you to know when a wizard is about to pull an illegal curse on you? You need to be prepared. You need to be alert and watchful," Moody's booming voice said, Hazel swallowed, her throat feeling as dry as the desert, "So....do any of you know which curses are most heavily punished by wizarding law?"

Several hands rose in the air, including Fred and George who were looking over the moon with the lesson already.

"Our dad told us about one," Fred said, his chest puffed out proudly, "the Imperius Curse."

Moody nodded appreciatively, "Ah, yes. Your father would know that one. Gave the Ministry a lot of trouble at one time," he walked over to the jars that were besides the window. His back turned to the classroom as he reached his palm into the first jar. When he finally turned back around, he held a large spider in the palm of his hand. He pointed his wonky wand at the creature before muttering, "Imperio."

The spider leapt from Moody's hand on a thin thread of silk. Hazel watched carefully as it began to swing before making a backflip which broke the silk thread. The spider landed on Lee's desk. Moody jerked his wand and the spider rose onto it's hind legs before beginning to tap dance.

The class began laughing at the tap dancing spider. All apart from Hazel and Moody. The brunette began feeling sick.

"Think it's funny, do you?" Moody growled, "You'd like it, would you, if I did it to you?"

The laughter instantly died.

"Total control," Moody said quietly, "I could make it jump out of the window, down itself, throw itself down one of your throats...Years back, there were a lot of witches and wizards being controlled by the Imperius Curse. Some job for the Ministry, trying to sort out who was under the curse and who was acting on their own free will. The Imperius Curse can be fought- I'll be teaching you how, but it takes real strength of character, and not everyone's got it. Better avoid being hit with it if you can."

Moody picked up the spider, "Anyone else know one? Another illegal curse?"

Hazel didn't even dare to lift her hand up. She knew of all the Dark Curses, but she didn't want to participate in this lesson anymore. Moody's glass eyes wandered over her, before glancing over at the handful of teens that did have their hands up.

"Yes?" Moody said, his magical eye fixed on Lee Jordan.

Lee cleared his throat, "The Cruciatus Curse."

The Professor nodded. Moody cleared his throat before placing the spider back down onto Lee's desk, "The Cruciatus Curse. Crucio!"

As soon as the words left Mad-Eye Moody's mouth the spider began to roll its body, twitching horribly and squealing loudly. However Moody didn't remove his wand, his stare fixed upon the tortured spider. Hazel looked down at her desk, her eyes watering as she listened to the squeals of the defenceless creature.

"Stop it!" She finally shouted, her chair falling backwards as she shot up out of her seat, gaining everyone's attention.

Moody finally moved his wand, the spider stopped squealing but it's leg still twitched.

"Pain," Moody finally said, "You don't need thumbscrews or knives to torture someone if you can perform the Cruciatus Curse... that one was very popular too. Why don't you provide us with the last curse, Miss. Lupin?"

Hazel glared at the Professor, "No," She told him firmly, clearly surprising him.

Moody kept his magical eye fixated on the brunette, his jaw was clenched shut as he wordlessly lifted the spider from Lee's desk. His boots caused some of the floorboard to squeak; reminding Hazel of the sound the spider emitted merely seconds before, as he made his way over to the girl. He placed the spider down on her desk, his eyes still locked on her before he looked down at the spider for merely a second, "Avada Kadavra."

As soon as the spell hit the defenceless creature, a bright green flash illuminated the room for a brief moment, before the spider fell limp on Hazel and Angelina's desk. The class was silent as they realised what just happened.

Hazel clenched her jaw, her teary eyes landed on her bag before she bend down and swiftly grabbed it. Without a word, she pushed her chair away.

"Class isn't over yet, Miss. Lupin," Moody's voice called out after her, his voice sounding as if he was teasing her.

Hazel didn't reply. She didn't even turn around as she head straight for the door. Slamming it loudly on her way out.
