JAMES
Walking into the parking lot, I carry the bags with one hand and unlock the car with the other.
As the car's lights flash in response, I pull the door open and place the bags hanging by my fingers, on the seat.
The heavy bags had begun to mark my skin, leaving a few lines visible, but I ignore it. Slamming the door shut, I walk around to the driver's seat and get in.
Aunt Evelyn had asked me to buy some things for today's dinner, and the moment school ended I drove straight to the supermarket.
Closing the door to my side, I look over my shoulder and bring the seatbelt across my torso before it clicks with the lock.
As I turn the car on, my phone rings.
Picking it up from the cupboard, I look at the contact name.
It's Rose.
At the mention of her name, I think back to everything Nathan told me today.
The things he revealed to me.
The anger, the fury I felt as I listened to him speak.
The desire I had to just tell her the truth.
Something had changed.
I no longer felt the same way about Rose.
Every feeling, every emotion I feel for her has enhanced.
The urge to protect her has grown.
I want her more than ever, now.
Connecting the phone to the car's Bluetooth, I answer her call.
"Straaaanger!"
Stepping on the accelerator, I proceed to drive. "Hi, baby."
"So I've been thinking."
Oh no.
She's been thinking.
"Mhm." I drawl out slowly, slightly afraid of the direction this conversation is heading.
"I'm concerned about our relation." Her voice reaches my ear and I find myself tapping the steering wheel at her words. "I'm failing you. I mean, when was the last time I said a pick-up line to you? I haven't even used a term of endearment for you in a while. Do you understand what this means?"
My lips form an 'O' shape.
So that's what this is about.
Clicking my tongue, I respond. "Yeah?"
"You don't!" Rose accuses immediately. "This is a crisis!"
As she yells, I imagine Rose dragging both hands down her face in frustration.
That's a sight I would love to see.
"James, I'm a horrible soon to be wife." She cries out and I stifle a laugh.
