josh was sleeping on everest's couch when she got a call. she didn't recognize the number, but she answered it anyway.
"is this everest emerson?" a female voice asked.
"uh, yes. who is this?" she answered wearily.
"i'm calling from oceanside hospital. are you the daughter of molly emerson?"
her breathing hitched, "yes i am."
"we're calling to tell you that your mother is in the hospital because of an alcohol overdose. she's in critical condition right now."
everest's breathing quickened, her mom could die. "okay. thank you. i need to go." she vaguely registered dropping her phone.
she stood there, in shock. her mother, her only real family. could die. maybe her mother did terrible things, but it was still her mother. and up until a certain point, her mom was a great person. who cared and took care of her.
she choked back a sob, not wanting to wake josh. she quickly grabbed a bag and put in a couple sets of clothes and other toiletries.
as she rummaged around her apartment, josh must have heard her and woke up.
he glanced at her in confusion, "you trying to walk out on me ev?"
he then noticed the tears on her eyes, and engulfed her in a hug. "hey, what's wrong?" he soothed.
"my mom is in the hospital. she's in critical condition." she pulled away from her boyfriend to wipe her tears. "i need to visit her."
he nodded, "okay. i'll book us a flight right now."
"us?" she questioned.
"of course. i don't want to go have to do this alone."
she gave him a teary smile. "thank you."
"of course everest, i love you."
"i love you too joshy."
