Too Close to Home

When I woke up late one night, Spock was sitting in my room. He seemed to be looking over one of the old books I had on my shelves. "Mr. Spock? To what do I owe the pleasure of your company this late evening?" That answer should have been obvious, probably some new mission parameters that he wanted to discuss.

I wasn't far off, in most of that aspect. "Ah, Lieutenant (Y/n), I hope you are feeling well." I nodded moving to stand. I held up a finger before drawing some curtains that seperated my bed from the main room deciding to pull on my work uniform. Not that this stopped him from speaking. "I was wondering if you would go to the observation deck with me."

To this I took pause, though it was a reasonable request. Given the time, I would have prefered later in the day when I had a mandatory break from work. Kirk and McCoy had been sending Sulu and Checkov to make sure I was taking them and not just working through them. "I suppose I can, though your timing is impeccable."

Pulling the curtain aside I adjusted the dress slightly, before motioning for him to take the lead. He seemed... almost pleased with my answer. A skip in his step that hadn't been there before and softer features compared to his usual Vulcan expressions. While we walked though, I enjoyed the silence of the ship, taking a moment to listen to the creaking of the bulkheads and taping of our shoes on the floorboards.

Once we made it to the observation deck, the window was already open. Stars and the occasional cloudy cluster passed us. Spock quickly took one of the seats, motioning for me to sit as well. Giving a small nod, I did so. Silently we watched the stars pass by the window, and I was enjoying the peace. Though I was surprised when soft music started playing, turning my attention to Spock. In his hands he held some Vulcan string instrument, the melody being played had a beautiful ring to it.

Letting my eyes close, I listened to it, starting to hum in tune with the sound. At least until he started playing one that I knew. To this I started singing along. Not immediately, of course, but after the first verse, I started singing.

Come now and follow me down
Down to the lights of Galway where
There's fine sailors walking the town
And waiting to meet the ladies there

Watch now he'll soon be along
He's finer than any sailor so
Come on now pick up your spoons
He's waiting to hear you play them WHO!

Here today and she's gone tomorrow
And next she's going to Galway
Jiggin' around and off to town
And won't be back until morning

Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
Mar tá do mhargadh déanta

Off with a spring in my step
The sailors are searching Galway for
A young lady such as myself
For reels and jigs and maybe more

Stay here and never you mind
The lights of the town are blinding you
The sailors they come and they go
But listen to what's reminding you
Handsome men surrounding you
Dancing a reel around you

Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay
And you've work to do in the morning
Give up your dream of going away
Forget your sailors in Galway

Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
Mar tá do mhargadh déanta

Listen to the music flow
I'm falling for the flow of home
I'm home to dance till dawning
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú

Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
Mar tá do mhargadh déanta

Stay a while and we'll dance together now
As the light is falling
We'll reel away till the break of day
And dance together till morning

Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
