After waiting for what felt like hours, Lily got her study materials out of her backpack to study for exams that were the next two days.

"Anything important we missed today?" Remus asked and peered over Lily's notes.

"No. Just review. Shouldn't be that difficult. I think they're going easy on us this year," Lily handed Remus her notes from earlier in the day and felt something still weighing in her pocket. "Here," Lily took out a chocolate frog and handed it to Remus. He looked surprised but thankful as he took a large bite out of it.

"I think I'm going to run to the kitchens and get us dinner. Unless anyone was actually planning on going to the great hall?" Sirius stood us. Lily and Remus shook their heads. When Sirius left, Lily sighed and looked at James and then her watch.

"If he doesn't wake up in a couple hours, we need to take him to the hospital wing," Lily looked at Remus who nodded solemnly. "Do you think he remembers who attacked him?"

"Does it matter if he does? I mean we aren't going to tell anyone," Remus put his feet up on the end of James's bed and took out some of his notes from earlier in the year. "Maybe it's better he stay asleep until after exams?"

"Remus," Lily laughed a little and smiled for the first time in what felt like years, despite it only having been a couple days.

"I'm surprised that Peter isn't back yet," Remus checked his watch and glanced at the entrance to the dormitory. They sat in silence and watched James sleeping. Occasionally, his arm or leg would twitch and both Lily and Remus would get their hopes up. Sirius returned after an hour or so with a mountain of food and pumpkin juice. Peter joined them soon after and no one bothered asking him where he had been that day.

"I need to go to bed," Lily declared after seeing the moon shining through the window. She stifled a yawn as she stood up and tried poking James a couple times as a last ditch attempt to wake him up.

"Don't worry, we'll come get you if something happens," Remus smiled weakly and patted Lily's arm. She nodded and turned to walk out of boys dormitory.

"Where have you been?" Marlene put down a book as Lily entered the girls dormitory.

"Was that a book you were reading? How long have I been gone?" Lily tried to joke and make light of the situation which earned her an eye roll from Marlene. Marlene swung her legs over the side of the four poster bed to watch Lily as she tossed a couple of things into her trunk.

"Exams this year are hard," Marlene pretended to pout and Lily smiled at her.

"I told you to start studying last month," She said in her famous I-Told-You-So voice. "I thought the opposite."

"Hey, don't avoid the question," Marlene pointed at Lily and crossed over to her. Lily put her fingers to her lips as Marlene's voice raised and pointed to a sleeping Alice.

"James isn't feeling great," Lily said which technically speaking wasn't a lie.

"Uh-huh," Marlene gave her a side eye that Lily avoided looking at by slipping on a sweater. It was James's quidditch sweater that fit her like a dress. The sleeves hung down almost to her knees and the bottom of the sweater passed her mid thighs. She took a deep breath in with her eyes closed and smiled. She could pretend he was okay and he was holding her in that sweater. "Well whenever you actually want to talk to your best friend, I'll be here," Marlene mumbled a little bitterly and crawled back into her bed. She yanked the curtains a little harder than she meant to which made Lily jump a little. Lily grabbed her brush from the bedside table and began to brush through all the knots from the day. It felt like it only made her hair worse and curls grow larger. Eventually, she set it back down and crawled in bed. Lily turned to her side and saw a picture of her and James from the end of the previous year. James was grinning like a little kid with his arm slung around Lily while Lily was laughing. She seemed unsure of herself and kept glancing at James as if to understand the meaning of it.
