Ashley swore loudly as she stumbled and sunk down to the ground with her face in her hands.
Within a matter of seconds, Duke reached Ashley and bent down next to her, looking scared. Right behind him, Coach Andrews, Zac and Sean, all three of whom saw what happened reached Ashley. The rest of the class stared around unsurely, looking around for the source of distraction. A few of them curiously walked over to where they thought Ashley was, when they saw people crowding around her.
"Ashley I am so sorry," Duke apologized feverishly. "I didn't mean to hit your face. I thought that you'd catch it. I just—"
"Shut it," Zac snapped. "Save it for later. Can't you see that she's hurt?"
"Bradford," Coach warned. "Language."
"Sorry Coach," Zac deadpanned.
Coach shook his head at Zac and turned to examine Ashley instead. "Ashley, are you okay?" he asked, sounding concerned.
Ashley looked up gingerly. "I guess," she muttered.
"Coach," Sean spoke up. "I think that one of us should take her to the medical room for an ice-pack; the right side of her face looks kinda swollen," he observed.
"He's right . . ." Zac agreed.
"But," Ashley began protesting, "I'm fine." She grimaced as she touched her right cheek. 'Okay, this hurts.'
"Alright then," Coach Andrews nodded briskly. "Zac and Sean, one of you can take her there. The rest of the class, please line up; we are going to practice dribbling."
Ashley slowly stood up as the rest of the class, except Gabriella, began to get back to their places.
"C'mon Ash,." Zac reminded her patiently. "We've gotta go."
Ashley sighed. "Alright . . ." She turned around to see Gabriella standing behind her. "Hey Gab."
"Take care, you," Gabriella smiled as she hugged her. "Go now. See you later!"
Zac turned towards Sean. "You're coming?"
"Yeah," he turned towards Gabriella. "Talk to you at lunch babe. Bye."
Gabriella nodded, and the three of them turned to walk towards the exit while Duke guiltily gazed towards their retreating backs.
By lunchtime Ashley's face was back to normal, thanks to the Ice pack. That day, Ashley, Gabriella, Zac and Sean were sitting along with Haley, Victoria, Jayden and Daniel for lunch.
"Oh my god!" Gabriella exclaimed loudly as she remembered something.
"Gab," Zac chuckled as the whole table went silent, and everybody just stared at Gabriella. "What happened?"
"I uh, remembered something that I've gotta talk to Ash about," Gabriella explained. "You guys go ahead, sorry for interrupting.
Zac glanced at Ashley and saw that she was looking as confused as he felt. "Okay then," he said slowly as he leaned back and stretched his long and lanky frame. "Go ahead," he yawned.
Gabriella excitedly turned to face Ashley, who just raised her eyebrows. "I've been meaning to ask you this since yesterday."
"Ask me what?"
