Arc 1: Ninth Princess With the Countenance of a Flower and Face Like the Moon

Prologue:

King Dizang, ruler of Hell, had become king when he swore not to attain Buddhahood until hell was empty. Now, Xie Fei was the King Dizang.

In the tens of thousands of years since becoming King Dizang, Xie Fei had always stayed in the Jade Cloud Palace in closed-door cultivation. Other than the most important things that needed to be reported to him, everything was left to the Houtu, the Queen of the Earth, and Judge of Hell Cui, and the judges of the Ten Courts of Hell each did their own duty.

Until now, everything ran smoothly.

They didn't know when it happened, but the judges of the Ten Courts of Hell discovered that the souls coming to Hell were a little off. These souls carried heavy resentment, rejecting Old Lady Meng's Lethe soup3, refusing to cross the Bridge of Helplessness4, and even stirring up the suppressed malicious spirits in Hell into agitation. After all, resentment was the best nutrition for these malicious spirits.

The judges of the Ten Courts of Hell furrowed their eyebrows, feeling that something was wrong, and they hurriedly reported to the honored Houtu. Houtu assigned Judge Cui to look into it, discovered the situation was grim, and contacted Xie Fei, interrupting his closed-door cultivation.

Xie Fei came out, wearing a black and gold robe with a gold sash tied at his waist and his hair tied back.

Houtu bowed slightly, her golden robe swishing with her movements. Judge Cui cupped his fists in respect. "Greetings to his honorable King Dizang."

Xie Fei nodded, his face indifferent. "What is it?"

Houtu's beautiful face turned solemn. Her voice was quiet and elegant when she spoke. "The Ten Courts of Hell reported to us that the souls recently have deep levels of hatred and obsession. Judge Cui investigated and discovered that these people might have suffered some kind of blow in their lives and became vengeful because of it. If we don't handle it appropriately, there's a good chance they'll turn into malicious spirits."

"Mm." Xie Fei pursed his lips, his handsome face looking cold.

Judge Cui glanced at Xie Fei, hesitating for a moment. "Honorable King Dizang," he said carefully, "these malicious spirits are already unsuitable to return to the cycle of reincarnation. Now, they only have two options. They can either collect their resentment and become malicious spirits, or they can stay in Hell, keep watch on their resentment, and become wandering ghosts."

Xie Fei's long fingers tapped slightly on the armrest of the chair, his peach blossom eyes wandering. After a long time, he finally spoke. "You said they have resentment?"

Judge Cui nodded, looking at Xie Fei doubtfully.

Xie Fei thought for a moment, then said calmly, "Then have them offer their souls in exchange for helping them dispel their resentment."

Houtu's tightly furrowed brow relaxed. She lifted her sleeve, laughing. "As expected, King Dizang doesn't disappoint. Jiejie6 really admires you.

Xie Fei nodded, his expression as indifferent as always, as if he hadn't heard Houtu's teasing. Houtu seemed used to it, not really minding Xie Fei's actions.

After finishing the discussion, Xie Fei rose and made to leave. Judge Cui said anxiously, "Honorable King Dizang, I'm not sure who is best suited to take on the task of dispelling resentment?"

"Out of the people in Hell, who is more free now?" Xie Fei sat back down in his seat, reclining back. He propped up his chin with one hand, his voice lazy.

Judge Cui waved a hand. A black book with the words "Judge's Book" embossed on the cover in golden letters appeared in his hand. He lifted his judgement brush to touch the cover lightly, and the volume began to flip open. Soon, Judge Cui closed the Judge's Book, looking up in astonishment. He smiled bitterly. "For now, only you and the honorable Houtu are more free."

"Oh?" Xie Fei glanced at Houtu in surprise, raising an eyebrow. "Then have Houtu—"

"King Dizang, from jiejie's perspective, it's better for you to do this," Houtu interrupted with a giggle, rolling her eyes at Xie Fei.

"For what reason?" Xie Fei said, looking at Xie Fei.

"Do you think the previous King Dizang was able to be so successful because he just cultivated in seclusion? You've already stayed in Hell for thousands of years, but you haven't seen the world. How can you vow not to attain Buddhahood as long as Hell isn't empty? How can you understand the things in the world or become one with the Tao?" Houtu pursed her lips, speaking faintly.

Xie Fei thought for a moment before he said calmly. "You said it well."

"Then we'll do it like this." Houtu waved a hand at Judge Cui commandingly, her spirits high. "Little Cui, have some people build a place around the entrance by the Bridge of Hell. It'll be called—"

Houtu tilted her head slightly, thinking. Her lips hooked up in a smile. "It'll be called the Soul Pawn Shop! Have Ox Head and Horse Face7 take the malicious spirits over there first, then contact the Heibai Wuchang. In the future, if there's any of those kinds of spirits, take them over there."

"Understood, honorable Houtu." Judge Cui agreed readily. He glanced at Xie Fei, who was still seated and unmoving, before he nodded.

From then on, there was a little cavern next to the bridge between the human world and Hell. The cavern's honor was a handsome, cold teenager. If you had love problems, resentment, something you can't get, or any regrets, you could come to trade.

The price for a trade—your soul.

And that was the Soul Pawn Shop.
