Aspen's POV:
The creaking of a gate wakes me up, and I try to turn to see where we are but something stops me. Daryl. In his slumber, he had laid his head on my shoulder, and wrapped both arms around my body. I turn my head slowly so I can look at him. He looks so peaceful, all of the usual furrows in his brow gone. I don't want to wake him, but I can see we've entered the prison's gates.

"Daryl." I whisper, stroking his hair. "We're here."

He opens his eyes, and meets mine. Our faces so close together awakens the butterflies within me, but he turns away and sits up. The car comes to a stop, and he jumps out. I sigh, watching him stalk off to the prison.

—————

Days have passed. Hershel convinced Rick to let Michonne stay until she gets better, but no such luck for Tyreese. Rick has pretty much lost it, waving his gun around, and screaming at no one. Even his daughter isn't enough to help ease the burden of his wife's death. I don't think he's even taken one look at the baby since we had returned. Since the car ride, I haven't seen more than Daryl's shadow as he leaves the room I just entered.

I sigh, and head up to one of the watch towers to relieve Glenn from his post.

"Hey man." I give him a small smile before sitting down beside him.

"How's it going Aspen?"

"I've been better." I sighed, laying my chin on the safety bar. "Anything new out here?"

"Just the usua-" Before Glenn could finish his sentence, two trucks tear down the dirt road to the prison, and bust through the gates.

"What the hell?!" Glenn and I pop up, watching the scene unfold. A man gets out of the truck, and opens up the back before he hops into the second truck, and they speed away.

The courtyard is still for a moment before walkers begin to climb out of the truck. "Shit!" Glenn and I sprint down the tower, and into the main cell block of the prison. "Walkers! In the gates!" We yell, sending everyone into a frenzy.

"How did this happen?" Hershel asks us.

"Some guys in trucks. Busted through the gate and left a bunch of walkers." Glenn responds, scanning the room for Maggie. I do the same, but looking for a leather jacket and blue eyes.

No luck.

"Where's Daryl?" I ask Hershel.

"Haven't seen him all day."

"We need to get everyone who can fight out in the yard." Glenn says as Maggie runs up to us.

"Come on! We gotta get out of here!" Her and Glenn take Hershel to a car outside, and I follow them.

"Y'all go ahead. I need to make sure everyone here is safe."

Maggie looked at me with worry in her eyes. "Are you sure we can't convince you to come?"

"No I need to get everyone out, and try to find Daryl."

Maggie sighed. "Alright. Be safe please." She gives me a hug before they drive off.

I sigh and turn towards the field. A hoard of walkers are slowly making their way to the prison, and more are streaming in from the hole the truck made. This was gonna be hell to try to escape.

"You ready to fight?" A young voice said from my side.

"Carl! What are you doing here? You need to be inside!"

"You can't beat them all on your own. You need help." I did need help, but I wasn't going to let Carl get hurt.

"You can help me until I think it's too dangerous. As soon as I say you need to leave, you run into the prison, and you lock that door. No matter if I'm behind you or not. Ok?"

"But-"

"Carl I'm serious. You can't be out here unless you're going to listen to me."

"Fine."

Turning to face the oncoming walkers, I realize they were much closer than before. I made sure Carl had a gun so he wouldn't have to get too close to the walkers, but could still help me out. Then they were on us. I stabbed and slashed one after the other as Carl shot as many as he could. He wasn't a bad shot for a young kid. But no matter how many we took down, another was there to take its place. Walker after walker made their way closer and closer to us.

"Carl. You need to go. They're getting too close."

"Aspen I'm not leaving you."

"Carl! Now! Go!" I felt bad for yelling at the kid, but he wasn't going to die on my watch. Carl took another look at me before sprinting to the prison door. Good. One less person I'd have to worry about.

I wasn't going to have to worry very long though, because the walkers were closing in. They surrounded me, and their grime filled teeth were starting to get way too close to my skin. I tried as hard as I could to stay on my feet, but one tackled me from behind, and I was down.

Here it comes. I braced myself for the first bite to be taken.

But right then an arrow shot through the walker on top of me. Then the one behind me. Soon the group of walkers around me were dead, and I could get back on my feet.

"Are ya fuckin insane?" Daryl came running through the gap and glared at me. "That was a death wish."

"I couldn't just sit inside, and let them bear down on the prison."

"There were a lot smarter options." I could tell he had a lot more he wanted to say, but we were still in a herd of walkers, and it wasn't going to be easy to get out.

I put my back to Daryl's, and one by one, we fought through the crowd. The crowd around us began to get more manageable, but there was a big hoard blocking the door Carl had gone into. I hope he found someone to help him. I looked around for another exit, and saw a door across the yard. "Daryl, there." I pointed to it, and we started to fight through the walkers blocking us from it.

We finally made it to the door, and Daryl flung it open, pushing me inside. He quickly locked it behind us and we both scanned our surroundings, breathing heavily. We were in some sort of storage room where the prison used to keep supplies, but now it was empty.

"Ya could've gotten yerself killed." Daryl took no time in continuing the conversation from the yard.

"I know how to defend myself thank you very much. I don't need you to tell me what I can and can't do." Daryl huffed and ran his hands through his hair, quite frustrated.

"I just lost my brother. I don't need to lose ya too." He said, a bit quieter.

"Daryl." I walked up to him, and lifted his chin up so he was looking at me. "You're not going to lose me. I promise. I'm right here."

Before I could say anything else, Daryl's lips met mine. The kiss started off frantic and quick, but soon deepened. I but his lip and sucked a bit before pulling away. His now dark eyes scanned my face.

"What?" I smirked.

"Shut up." He smashed his lips to mine again, scooping me up and laying me down on the ground. My eyes widened as he took off his shirt, I admired his toned chest before he was on top of me again.

Hmmm to skip or not to skip this next part? 🤔😉
