The turtles and Splinter: .....😣😫😖

I'm serious, this is going to get sad!

~*~

The five-year-old turtle tots were sitting on the embroidered rug in the dojo, kneeling before their sensei. "What are we gonna learn today, sensei?" Leo asked curiously.

The turtle tots often had morning lessons where Splinter taught them something. They didn't always train with weapons. Sometimes, they trained their minds.

Splinter smiled down at his sons before placing his staff off to the side. "Today, my sons, we are going to talk about family." The turtle tots looked up at him with a look of curiosity.

"Family?" Raph said. "Yes Rapheal, family...siblings, parents." Splinter affirmed. "Oh! You're our daddy, right?" Mikey asked with a smile.

"Yes my cub, I am your daddy." Splinter nodded, patting Mikey on the head. "And we're all brothers, right daddy?" Donnie asked, grinning.

"Yes Donatello, the four of you are brothers." Splinter replied. Leo sat up. "We don't have a sister?" He asked. The turtle tots sat up too.

Splinter froze up a bit. He wasn't sure if they were ready to hear that story. About Miwa. "Daddy...?" A small voice broke Splinter's concentration, pulling him from his thoughts.

"No my sons, you do not have a sister." Splinter said, hiding the tone of grief in his voice. The turtle tots tilted their heads curiously.

"Daddy...?" Mikey said. Splinter turned his attention to his youngest son. "Yes, Michealangelo?" Splinter pushed back his grief and forced a small smile.

"Do we have a mom?" Again, Splinter froze. That was the question he had been dreading. He had hoped he wouldn't have to explain that into his sons were much older.

The answer should have been simple. No. Taking a deep breath to compose himself, Splinter tried to think of the best way to explain this to them.

"I am sorry my sons, but you do not have a mother..." Splinter admitted. The turtles frowned a bit. They took a moment to process that before Mikey sat up with a curious look.

"Daddy, why don't we have a mom?" Mikey asked. Splinter frowned a bit. He knew that question was coming. He had been dreading it. But he couldn't avoid it any longer.

Splinter knelt down in front of his sons who looked up at him curiously. "My sons...I am going to tell you a story." He spoke as calmly as he could, determined to keep his emotions at bay.

The turtles sat up, listening. Splinter got up and grabbed a framed photo that always sad on its rightful place on the table in the corner. He brought it to the turtles who looked at it.

"This is me, about 6 years ago sign my wife, Tang Shen....your mother." The turtles looked at the picture. "You look different, daddy." Raph said.

"Yes, I was human..." Splinter smiled sadly. The turtles kept looking at the picture. "Daddy? Whose the baby in the picture?" Mikey asked. Splinter sighed to himself, sitting up.

"That was my daughter, Miwa...had she still been alive today, she would have been your one-san, your big sister." Splinter looked away from the photo a moment, closing his eyes.

"Daddy...?" Leo frowned. "Why aren't she and our mom here with us?" Splinter stroked his son's head, taking a slow, deep breath before continuing.

"They were killed in a terrible fire..." Splinter explained. "By a ruthless man named Oruko Saki..." The turtle's eyes widened. "They died...?" Donnie asked. Splinter nodded, closing his eyes for a moment again.

That night didn't just leave physical scars. It left a permanent one. That night is forever burned into Splinter's memory, plaguing him with grief, horrific flashbacks, nightmares.

And guilt.

Why did I let this happen?

It should have been me who had taken the hit...

I should have saved them...

I...I am so sorry Shen, Miwa...

I could not protect you...

"Daddy...?" The turtle tots pulled Splinter from his gruesome thoughts. "Are you okay?" They looked worried, their big eyes were wide.

Splinter nodded, pinching the bridge of his nose to compose himself before turning back to look at his sons. "I am fine, miwa...the lesson is over for today, you may go play."

Splinter sometimes called his sons by his late daughter's name. This often confused them, but they didn't know what to do. Splinter didn't even notice when he did it.

The turtle tots nodded, hesitantly at the name.  Once they were gone, Splinter grabbed the photo and placed it back on the table. The memories flew in once again.

The burning dojo.

The sounds of blades hitting one another.

Miwa crying.

The flickering of the flames.

The burning pain on Yoshi's arms and face where the flames nicked him.

The sight of his beloved wife lying before him, her charred body leaking with blood from a stab wound to her chest.

Shen!

Splinter finally broke. He clutched the photo close to his chest, letting silent tears fall. It had been 5 years...why wasn't he over this yet? He should have moved on by now.

Shen...Miwa...

Suddenly, he felt four little ones hug him tightly. His sons. "A-Akachans...?" The turtles looked up at their daddy with a small, sad smile.

"Don't cry daddy...mommy and Miwa may be in the great big dojo in the sky, but they probably loved us, and you, a lot..." Donnie said softly.

"Yeah, and we can see them again, right daddy? When we all to heaven?" Mikey added. Splinter nodded, holding his sons close.

"Yes, my sons...someday, we will see them again..." Splinter whispered, wiping away his tears as he hugged his sons tightly in his arms.

I may not have been able to protect my wife and child, but I can at least avenge them by protecting my sons...

Splinter knew that's what he had to do....
