By then, the convoy has just received information on the lastest U-boat positions from Ultra at Bletchy Park, passed onto them by the Admiralty.
One Swordfish were already launched for anti-submarine patrol, sighting a U-boat and attacking it. Forcing it to dive away from the Swordfish.
Three hours later...
07:00
Another Swordfish on patrol spotted two U-boats, however both of them dived before the Swordfish could launch an attack.
Only a few moments later, a BV 138 was spotted below the clouds and immediately, four Sea Hurricanes from 802 NAS took off without Y/n.
The BV 138 disappeared back into the clouds as the Sea Hurricanes gave chase. Unfortunately for the Sea Hurricanes however, the BV 138 managed to escape.
However, as soon as the Sea Hurricanes landed, the BV 138 dropped below the cloud again, much to the dismay of the 802 NAS pilots.
09:00
Even though several U-boats have been driven off by the Swordfish aircraft on patrol, more aircraft and U-boats were spotted, dropping mines ahead of the convoy.
On the right flank however, the Russian freighter Stalingrad was hit by a torpedo on her starboard side. The convoy quickly made an emergency turn to the right.
The Oliver Ellsworth, an American Liberty-class ship had to steer hard left to avoid the Stalingrad. In doing so, she was hit by another torpedo on her starboard.
