SHE COULD FEEL her heartbeat in her ears as her feet hit the soft trek of the treadmill along with the rhythmic beat from the mechanics of the machine grinding to keep propelling her forward until she chose to stop. Being winter in New York meant that her daily joggings were placed on a pause, however, she hadn't been keeping up on her daily exercises and the agency needed her to be in her best physical shape. That is if she were to get anywhere with the case that she had been working on with her partner.

Of course, he had told her that patience was a virtue when it came to these cases, they wouldn't be solved in a week like the media had portrayed in movies and television. Oftentimes, some cases had dragged on so long with so little evidence that they end up being closed due to the little activity on them. She wasn't going to let that happen to their case. Or at least, she hoped.

The sound of Mrs. Carter wailing about her husband's disappearance, the distant look on her face – as if she were ready to give up on life, the look haunted her. She couldn't imagine what life would be if Steve just upped and disappeared on her. The endless spiraling depression she would be in. It had her worrying about him every time he had gone on a mission.

Including the one, he was on at this very moment.

She hadn't had any contact with him since he left a couple of days ago, which was common on missions but she still couldn't help that a sinking feeling was starting to settle into her stomach. Hydra wasn't an organization she was interested in exploring further, however, Steve had taken it upon himself to hunt down every Hydra base to try to snuff out their light. She knew though, that Hydra would never cease to exist. There would always be someone out there to pick up where they had left off.

That terrified her. To know at any moment that someone could come up to her and use her as a weapon once again. The thought alone was enough to make her trip on the treadmill, her shoe squeaking against the rubber as she tried to steady herself. She quickly hit the red button, slowing the machine to a halt. Her breathing was labored as she plants both of her hands on her knees, then to her hips as her eyes scan the top of the machine, looking at the distance she had run. Only five point five miles. She was starting to lose her edge.

As she wiped off the sweat that had started to build on her forehead, she looked to her phone, hoping that there would be some sort of contact from Steve or Stark Industries. Still nothing. She had missed a call from Stark Industries last night.

When she had returned home and let her phone charge she realized she had missed a call from Stark Industries. For a moment she had stood in her room paralyzed. She would've expected a missed call from Steve, not Stark Industries. The notification sent her heart rate skyrocketing. When she listened to the voicemail that was left she realized it was from Asami informing her to show up at the headquarters at noon the next day. Nothing in regards to Steve's well-being.
