As she passed the boy in the hallway a week later, her friend, to her horror, called out a hello. He smiled and returned the greeting, while he bounced on his heels. The girl hid her tiny frame behind another friend, her best friend, as the two started talking.

While they joked around and talked for a short while, the girl peeked over her best friend's shoulder, raising herself on her tip-toes in order to see the boy. She shyly admired his clear and full laugh that wasn't too loud or too quiet, as well as the way one corner of his mouth was turned up higher as he smiled.

When the conversation stopped and the three girls walked away, in a hushed voice the girl whispered to her friend, "How on earth do you know him?" and with a laugh her friend replied "Well if you weren't so shy and helped out with painting for the play sets, you'd know him too."

After that the girl was silent, feeling a bit more guilty of how her nervousness held her back. She wished she was a little more normal, like her friend.
