My little parking lot speech from earlier today actually worked – that’s if you could even call it a speech. But the point was that the photos and videos which were being passed around, had been reduced to a bare minimum.
Even Amy, with her unending inquisitiveness, didn’t go her usual route of trying to probe for details. Although, I figured that might have something to do with the warning stare I threw at her earlier when she made to approach my chair in class.
But in all, everything was going great so far. My friends totally bought all I told them about Hawk and I – which in my defence, weren't exactly lies.
Now, all that was left was to get through lunch break, act like Hawk and I were a sweet new couple, and of course, hope my friends didn't figure out we were faking.
Ok, maybe everything wasn't really as great as it sounded in my head. But on the bright side, things could get a whole lot worse.
“Brooke.”
And it just got worse.
I don't know how, but I somehow managed a not-so-awkward smile as I took in the boy in front of me, with my lips giving way to a soft: “hey.”
“Hey,” he answered with a small smile of his own.
My friends shared knowing glances, and were excusing themselves soon after. Sunny turned to mouth, “awkward,” but was quick to continue walking when he glanced behind him.
I, on my part, couldn’t help agreeing with her; this was going to be awkward to say the least.
In the past, I'd dated a bunch of guys whenever Jason and I broke up, but we both knew they were in no way serious. But now, things were kind of different.
Although were they really different? Hawk and I were anything but serious. But of course Jason didn't know that.
“So,” he started, pulling me out of my weird thoughts.
“Hmm.” I rewarded myself with a thousand mental slaps afterwards, for not thinking of a smart response.
“How are you doing?”
“Great,” I answered simply, trying my best to keep from adding, ‘well, aside from the fact that I'm dating a guy who I first spoke to four days ago.’
But it seemed my answer must have been good enough for him, as he was now giving a small nod. “Well, that's nice to know.”
I could only offer a lame: “yeah” in response. Although, the words I truly wanted to voice were: ‘where is Trina? Do you know she’s trying to hookup with you? Do you like her? Can you see yourself loving her? Tell me!’
But choosing to not appear as a crazed girl, I kept those questions to myself and just stared at him instead – the both of us trying and failing miserably to act like the entire situation wasn’t at all awkward.
A moment of silence followed, and then some more silence. I was still contemplating what to say to break the ice when his voice floated through.
“So, you and Moose, huh?”
“Yeah,” I started, tittering slightly. “It just kind of happened. But right now we're um…”
What was that expression Shay used when describing her relationship with Adrian? Oh, right!
“We're just testing the waters, getting to know each other better,” I finished.
“Sounds nice,” he mused, a gentle smile on his lips. I, however, could only nod – not quite sure of what to say next.
