21: Saying 'you know' won't actually make me know

Ever thought of what it'd be like if Hawk had a twin? Well, I hadn't.

But right now, standing here and watching the exchange in front of me, I could say with certainty that I knew what having two Hawks would be like.

“I mean, I wasn't exactly searching all over camp for you, I was just, you know, searching for...you. And I….” Angie rambled on, with me watching in fascination at the speed with which she was able to get her words out.

“My parents came to get me then, and there was not enough time to say byes. Sorry,” Hawk explained, staring apologetically at her.

Her pouty lips formed an “oh” at that. “Actually, I thought it was because of what happened after the party,” she was now saying, face seeming a bit...flushed? And one look at Hawk revealed an almost similar expression.

Well, well.

Entertainment news take a backseat, I was getting the juiciest gist of my life just standing here. All I had to do was grab my imaginary popcorn and watch the show.

“No, that wasn't it at all.”

“Yeah, I guessed so too,” Angie mused with a soft chuckle, which did nothing to lessen the awkwardness. “I mean, that was just a thing – a thing that happens, normally, usually, regularly…”

Before Angie could find any more ‘-ly’ words, I decided to remind the flushed duo of my presence using what was perhaps, the world's most fake cough.

But on the bright side, it did fulfill its purpose – Angie's eyes immediately snapped to my direction, looking as though she was finally realizing that someone else had been present all this while.

‘Am I invisible or something? Who does this chick think she is? She might have a history with Hawk or whatever, but he's my boyfriend now! Fake or not.’

Those were probably things I'd have said if she were the bitchy ex-girlfriend in one of those cliche rom coms, or if I actually wasn't enjoying myself by watching her exchange with Hawk.

However, this girl in front of me just stared, embarrassed at me – probably a result of her knowing I’d just witnessed her not exactly teary-eyed reunion with Hawk.

Hawk, on his part, seemed to have finally snapped out of his flushed state, and was now saying, “Brooke, this is Angie, my friend.”

Is she really just a friend, Hawk? Is she really?

“And Angie, this is Brooke, my girlfriend.”

The last part came out sounding more like a question, leaving me to bite back a chuckle.

“Hello,” I greeted, my lips upturned in a smile which was soon mirrored by Angie.

“Hi,” she said, albeit a little shyly. “It's nice to meet you.”

Is it really nice, Angie? Is it really?

But to her I said, “it's nice to meet you too.”

The situation grew even more awkward after that – if it was even possible. No one said a word until…

“So, um, Hawk and I came to get a few things,” I piped up, drawing her attention to the stuff we bought.

She must have gotten my message because she suddenly hit her forehead with a soft chuckle. “Sorry, silly me. I'd get on it right away.”

I nodded, trying my hand at a friendly smile. “It's fine.”
