I zoned out the conversation at the table, my thoughts drifting towards something else, or rather, someone else.

She really was amazing – and what she did today only laid further claim to that fact. Just thinking back to it brought a small smile to my insides – albeit one that was short-lived, as Hilda’s voice was soon slicing through my thoughts.

“It’s impressive how people are able to glorify something that isn’t worth the glorification.”

“That’s high schoolers for you,” Donald chimed in, giving an empathetic shake of his head as though he wasn’t aware that he was also a high schooler.

“It’s not entirely their fault though,” Ria mused, joining in the conversation whose direction I still didn’t understand. Why was everyone being philosophical all of a sudden?

“Some people,” she continued, eyes glazing over to the table in the distance.

Following her gaze, I immediately recognized just what people she was referring to. Ok, I was beginning to suspect that I just might not like the direction of this conversation – and her next words confirmed it.

“Well, some people and their conduct are just the problem. And when something goes wrong because of their own fault, they find ways to justify it.”

Was she saying what I thought she was?

I shot her a pointed stare, asking, “what’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, babe,” she answered, smiling softly at me. I didn’t smile back.

However, it was another voice that spoke this time – Amy. “Did you see what she was wearing in the pictures?” I wasn’t sure which was more absurd – her pointless question, or the twitching of her lips in what I figured was supposed to be ‘humor.’

“It seemed more like a top than a gown,” Garret was now voicing in response, with the others chuckling.

I, however, was feeling anything but mirthful. “So, you’re saying it’s right that she had her pictures leaked because of the length of her gown? Because if that’s it, then you’d sure be sounding like an insensitive prick,” I deadpanned, leaving his lips to part wordlessly. The others suddenly turned shifty too.

But Garret was the only one making desperate attempts to explain himself – he was failing miserably by the way. “No… that’s not…I…”

“Garret didn’t mean that,” Ria swiftly cut in, saving him from his misery. “None of us would even think to suggest something like that. Sunny doesn’t deserve that; no one does. But we’re just saying that maybe this whole situation could have been avoided if she had better...ideals.”

You’ve got to be kidding me.

“And I’m not saying it’s her fault or anything,” she added, perhaps in hopes of remedying the situation. It didn’t. “It takes a right to correct a wrong.”

Why was she suddenly talking like some old lady who had seen the whole world, and was now sharing her wisdom with the younger generation?

“But when you’re surrounded by wrongs, how can one turn out right?”
