14: Crying is something I'm still not good at

Shay: I feel so cheated 😠 Hawk is already stealing you from me. What does he have that I don’t?

Me: That’s easy – a dick 😜

Shay: 😂 bitch.

I chuckled to myself at Shay’s dramatics before returning my phone to its position on the bed. Actually, today was my first ‘class’ with Hawk, so I had to bail from hanging out at Shay’s with my friends after school.

Now, though, I returned my attention to the movie we were watching, specifically the third movie – each more sappy than the preceding one.

I reached for the bowl of popcorn – which would have been a pretty normal action if it wasn’t for the fact that Hawk and I ended up reaching for the bowl at the same time, our fingers gently brushing against each other in the process, leaving a tiny tingle in its wake.

We could only chuckle, with mine carrying an unsteady edge to it, my insides screaming: ‘what the hell just happened?’

He, however, was quick to pull his hands away, giving me room to grab a handful of popcorn.

I knew I should have used separate bowls.

“So,” he started, perhaps in an attempt to ease the awkwardness that had begun building up in the room. Although, if I was being honest, it’s more like it had been building up for a while.

And by a while, I meant since I invited him into my room, since we sat on my bed with nothing but a bowl of popcorn between us as we stared at the TV screen ahead. And all the while, we were trying to act like all of this was totally normal.

Let’s just say when I thought of having a guy over, I’d envisioned it’d be under different circumstances. You know, more bed squeaking and less bed sitting. Ok, that made no sense. But you get what I mean, right?

Thankfully, I was snapped out of my weird thoughts by the sound of Hawk’s voice. “So, how have you been liking the movies so far?”

I shrugged. “They’re alright I guess. Although, I'm pretty sure you've been enjoying them way more than I have,” I answered lightly.

His reply came as an exaggerated gasp. “You liar! You were laughing all through ‘Falling for Her.’”

“Well...that's only because you were laughing first; I had to laugh with you so you wouldn't seem like a crazed person,” I reasoned.

He cocked a knowing brow. “Ok, fine,” I sighed. “It was a pretty funny movie.”

Although, less than a second later, I was adding, “but I think what's even funnier is how the writers manage to exaggerate everything. Like Tammie for one, how is she so nice, caring, smart, talented, and good natured. It's like she can do no wrong – I don't think it's possible for anyone to be that perfect.” I made air quotes at the last word to emphasize my point.

But I wasn’t quite done yet. “And you know the worst part? She’s supposed to be this smart, goal-oriented girl, but all she does is hang around Xavier. She's like his little cheerleader, his go-to nurse, and his guidance counselor. It's as if all her time revolves around him,” I ranted to a clearly amused Hawk. “Doesn't she have anything better to do?”

“Well, it depends on how you see it,” he offered, smiling softly.

But I just scoffed. “Nah, I'm pretty sure that's how it is.”

“You know, the fact that she was trying so hard to help Xavier through his issues, doesn't mean she doesn't have better things to do. She had a lot of things going on for her – like that internship for one.”
