(Y/N) had hoped Sonic meant about the elephant in the room, hoped that they would finally talk about that evening and if it even meant anything anymore; she was starting to wonder if it ever meant anything. Instead, the blue hedgehog turned to her and asked where she wanted to start with helping the citizens. After the way they treated her, she wasn't sure if she wanted to help them right now anyway.

She was taken back by this, staring at Sonic in hope that he was joking, or maybe didn't realise what she wanted to do. But no, his emerald eyes watched her, waiting for an answer. She held her arm self-consciously, giving a weak shrug,

"I... Might help my neighbours... Check on my house as well." She mumbled.

The hedgehog nodded, "That sounds like a good idea. I might check out the main part of the city then, see if they need any help."

He was going to the other side of town? What, was he trying to avoid her now?

(Y/N)'s grip on her arm tightened slightly and she gave a nod, feeling a tightening ache in her chest. This would be the perfect time to go for a walk, to talk about it, and he was taking this opportunity to avoid her? It felt weird to think they were going to split up now, they had spent so much time together the past few months.

And suddenly, she felt like she was back on the cliff. The sun shining in the distance, casting an orange glow as it disappeared over the horizon. The fighting was over, and now the two were parting ways, but before they left, the shared a moment, soft, sweet, warm.

(Y/N)'s chest felt tight as the memory faded, but she gave a curt nod,

"Alright, that... Sounds like a good plan." She stated, turning on her heel, "I guess I'll see you later today?"

"Yeah." Sonic said, though he didn't leave straight away. Instead, he watched her go, wondering why it looked like she was trying to strangle her arm, and why her eyes seemed so distant.

~Time Skip~

The sun was starting to set when (Y/N) had returned from her time in the city. Still feeling sombre about this morning, she hurried back to the main computer room, where she found Sonic and Tails already talking amongst each other. The (a/t) stopped just inside the door, holding her arm again. Her chest felt tight, strained, like she'd been carrying a heavy weight all day.

The two noticed her arrival and both waved her over, she took this as her cue to join them and Sonic gave her a smile,

"How was helping the neighbours? They didn't give you any trouble, did they?" He asked, raising a brow at her.

"Uh..."

The truth was, (Y/N) hadn't gone to help the neighbours like she said she would. Instead, the (a/t) had found herself returning to the cliff that seemed to want to plague her mind recently. Of course, she didn't want to admit that, she already felt like a lousy hero after her welcome to the city this morning, to admit she didn't bother helping anyone felt like it was only confirmation of that fact.

"Nah, it went well. They were nice." She gave a shrug, though Sonic watched her for a moment, his eyes studying her. What was he trying to figure out?

The (a/t) started to squirm under his intense gaze, worried about the serious look in his eyes. What had happened between them since this morning? They had been such a good team, and now they seemed so alienated from each other. The hedgehog then shook his head, a smile spreading out over his muzzle. His cheeks turned a light shade of red as he rubbed the back of his head,

"That's good to hear."

Tails then cleared his throat, reminding the two that they weren't alone. They turned to him, now both sharing a sheepish grin, before he motioned them to look at the large computer screen. To (Y/N), it looked as if the screen hadn't changed at all, aside from another document possibly being open instead of whatever he had access to earlier. Sonic gave it a similarly measured look of confusion, before turning to his fox friend,
