Mark's surroundings felt warmer than he was used to. It reminded him of the gentle beams of sunshine that would radiate through the clouds back on Earth— but when the engineer opened his eyes, he was met with only blinding white light. His eyes automatically closed shut, and his face scrunched up with a tired groan as he tried to tilt his head away.

But instead of being able to move, he felt stuck in place. Something metal jingled when he tried to; he heard a voice chitter some strange-sounding syllables, and so despite the brightness Mark forced his bleary eyes to open once more.

His vision first focused on that blasted light: it wasn't the sun, but a rather powerful glowing square glaring down at him. Then he noticed the world beyond the strange bulb; he was in an odd-looking room, that was both large enough for him and yet not made for him...? The windows looked too small, but he wasn't sure whether his depth perception was off or if that curved wall was really as close as it appeared.

Mark tried turning over, but something creaked as it strained against him in protest. He forced his head to move just enough to realize why— metallic bars were strapped tightly to his whole body, and there was even a muzzle fit tightly between his jaws. As soon as he registered the foreign object between his teeth, Mark gagged and fidgeted against the constraints. He felt the metal start to give beneath one arm, and so he strained with all his weary might before it finally snapped free, and he sluggishly brought his hand up to the muzzle before ripping it from his mouth.

As he gasped in a proper breath of air, however, he heard a scream and quickly turned head; staring back at him was another alien— similar to Jack— but she wore a red jacket, and her wide eyes glowed green. The small woman shrieked again, frantically backing up multiple steps while barking something out in a foreign tongue. Mark then finally noticed that there were others— more of them!— and they were all panickedly backing away from him, watching him with rounded eyes from the edges of the room.

Mark was extremely close to correctly guessing that they were doctors of some kind, and had been trying to heal his injuries— but then he remembered Jack. Jack! Where was he? Was he okay?

He tried opening his mouth to ask for his diminutive ally, but the aliens before him flinched back with fear. Okay, talking wouldn't work. If he could just find Jack, then maybe he could explain to Mark what was going on! So, Mark tried resisting his bonds again, and he was relieved to feel them all snap almost at once. He quickly sat up and brushed the metal off, rubbing at the marks they left behind on his skin.

"Man, those were on tight," he muttered. He looked over at the aliens once more, seeing that they were far away enough for him to get up without accidentally hurting any of them. He slowly turned over and pushed himself up, his hands about to leave the ground when he suddenly heard a squeak. Something had fallen from his shoulder, and was about to tumble down his chest to hit the floor far below— had Mark not instinctively raised his arm, fortunately catching the small form against his diaphragm.

It was another of Jack's kind, a small brunette with light pink eyes. She looked winded from the fall, but as soon as she realized where she was her gaze had snapped upward to lock onto Mark's, frozen stiff with fear. He stared back at her, lips slightly parted as his tired brain struggled to register what had almost happened.

"Are you okay?" He found himself asking. The girl's brow pinched, and she tilted her head. Right, alien, probably didn't speak english in hindsight. "Umm..." Mark scanned the ground for a safe way to help her down, but he finally realized with a jolt that all of the extraterrestrials in the room had their eyes locked onto him, still watching for his next moves with sheer terror.
