You sat in a corner of the entrance hall of the EU parliament in Brussels, arms crossed in front of your chest and watched how people kept storming through the glass doors.

The expressions on their faces ranged from uninterested business men to panicking secretaries and concerned politicians.

Not far from you stood a small group of people, probably members of congress.

They had a heated argument about how things couldn't stay this way, everything had to change and drastic measures were needed. The usual big talk and big words before everything would remain the same.

You knew their demands by heart and also that they were just full of shit.

The only reason they pretended to fight for this position was to keep their seat in parliament. And that sweet, sweet money that the European Union payed them by the load.

Sighing, you let your head fall back and closed your eyes.

This was boring.

"You're here early.", a female voice suddenly reached your ears.

Strangely, you hadn't heard anyone approach you. But it was easy to tell who that women was.

You opened your eyes and gifted her a nagging expression.

"You promised me something big is gonna happen, my dear Katie.", you purred. "And now I'm here, in time for once, and everything is just the way I had expected it to be. Bunch of boring bullshit."

The blond woman gifted you a thin smile and a soft shrug of the shoulders. She was in her late thirties, maybe already early forties, with blue eyes and a small build.

You hadn't talked to her personally in a while, but Laswell was one of the very few people who had authority over your missions. Or at least most of them.

"It didn't start yet.", she said and took a seat next to you.

You scooted over to give her more space and also to have some distance, because sometimes she managed to scare the shit out of you. She always knew how to play nice and had managed to fool you many times into believing she had your best interests at heart.

Truth was, she just did her job.

And another truth was also that you didn't like what she did as a job, so you tried not to make friends with her. She was a good colleague though, always reliable and professional.

Something that didn't always apply to you.

To your luck and others misfortune, you were so good in what you were doing that there wasn't a way around requesting you when shit was about to get down.

The same kind of shit that Laswell needed you to fix now.

You huffed.

"Didn't start yet?", you looked around. "From what I can see a lot of things have already started. Must be something big because otherwise the Europeans wouldn't have let the Americans take two steps into their holy halls of the Union. Also, I might be wrong, but I saw some Brits running around too. Are they trying to slide back into the spot they blew because of their royal empire pride?"

She shook her head. Laswell had never been one to take a joke. She always answered your exaggerated expressions seriously.

"They are here to cooperate.", she said.

You raised an eyebrow.

"The British? Cooperating? I don't know Laswell... They couldn't even cooperate with themselves after the government collapsed. Did the EU kidnapp the queen? Threatened to water down their pints? They must have something to blackmail them."

Slightly annoyed, she tilted her head to gift you the kind of look that an annoyed mother would give her child.

"I want to remind you, the Americans are here to cooperate too.", she said. "If they are here the UK has to follow as well."

You huffed.

"Yeah, I'm not sure if American involvement makes anything better..."

"We protect the world's peace."

"Same thing the Russians say about themselves.", you shrugged and leaned into her direction, a bitterly sarcastic grin on your face. "Most countries only talk good about themselves and never acknowledge the terrible facts, no?"

"I think..."

"Whatever you think about America is valid, Laswell. But your opinion doesn't hold the same power as facts. Whatever you feel, it isn't on the same level as numbers and statics."

Her lips moved. A deep breath escaped her before she turned her eyes away again.

"A bold thing to say for you.", she noted. "I didn't know you had such a strong opinion."

A bitter smile appeared on your lips.

"You mean you're disappointed that I developed one in the first place.", you threw your head back again and allowed your eyes to rest. "Don't worry, what I think doesn't get into the way of my duties. I might not like all the orders. But I'll fulfil them anyways."

She hummed.

"Why?"

"Because that's what I exist for, Katie. Shouldn't you out of all people know?"

She nodded.

"Good thing that my judgement didn't deceive me.", she got up. "I did make the right choice to request you."

Chuckling, you opened one eye to look at her.

"Whoever has to deal with me will hate you.", you laughed. "I hope you're not friends, because after the mission with me, that friendship will be dead."

But she just shook her head, as confident as she always was. If there was one thing that Laswell could do it was making good decisions that didn't affect her.

It affected others instead.

Others like you.

"Don't worry.", she said. "You might be a hand full, but this team knows what they're doing."

"So do I. Doesn't change the fact I tend to challenge peoples patience."

"I picked a good partner for you."

You pulled a face, annoyed that it wasn't a solo mission.

"Is he handsome?", you asked as a joke and grinned as broad as humanly possible.

She let out a sight and shook her head.

"This is important. You have to stay professional."

You raised your hands in defence.

"Alright, alright. I'll climb him after the mission is over."

She rolled her eyes.

"Don't waste your energy. He's a hard nut to crack."

"You know me. I love a good nut."
