She sits on the edge of the couch, waiting for Maxim to come downstairs. She has been doing this a lot, so much so he has already dispensed one of his keys to her. She does not understand or even remember how she got herself in this kind of mess. What if he finds out?
“There she is!” Maxim exclaims from up the flight of stairs. She always finds that look in his eyes intriguing, maybe even confusing. Elis has always been attracted to mystery, and danger. Maxim is one of the town’s tycoons. When she first came to town, she started working for him as a field agent. He argued that she has impeccable people skills, and as such, she was best suited to persuade people out of their lands, following which he could build more modern houses. He may have been right; Elis has helped Maxim acquire about five pieces of land thus far.
“Come.” He says when he reaches down the stairs, standing there, with his arms wide open. “I missed you. Didn’t you miss me?” he asks.
Partly, Elis is hesitant to run into his embrace. However, there is a very powerful pull that makes it hard for her to resist. Once I figure this shit out, I am out of your life! She says to herself quietly as she stands and starts walking towards him.
“There there…” he says hoarsely as they embrace. “So how are you today my darling?” he asks and she feels her cheeks turn scarlet red. That voice has also weakened her to her knees on several occasions.
“I’m well.’” She responds curtly. “Just a little tired.” She adds, walking back to the couch.
“You wouldn’t be if you listened to me and stayed here. All this moving around is wearing you out.” He says, joining her. He takes her right hand in his and stares into her eyes.
“Elis…why don’t you just move in with me?” he asks.
Elis visibly shudders at the thought. “I told you Maxim, I can’t just live my sister alone.” She lies.
“You can move in with her. There is plenty of room.” He responds, waving his arms around. “I will even employ a nurse if need be.” He adds and for a second, she is salivating. There is nothing this man would not do for her. And perhaps that’s why she dug herself into the pit she is currently trying to climb out of. Subconsciously, she places her left hand on her lower abdomen. You shouldn’t have to be such an inconvenience. She thinks, gently placing her head on Maxim’s shoulder.
