A promising failure

Number Five and Number Eight Hargreeves stood in the same alleyway they first landed in upon their arrival, waiting for the other side of the deal to show up.

Both of them were still in their bloodied clothes, their faces covered in dry red liquid as well.

The boy was picking on his nails, in his other hand clenching the seen through plastic bag filled with water and a tiny fish swimming inside, while the girl casually leaned into the building a few feet away from Five, her arms crossed across her chest.

The knocking of the heels on the cemented ground echoed in the air in the small shriek between the buildings. "Well?" the Handler asked, stepping closer.

Without a word, the boy reached out, his fist still holding the bag, while his back was still at the woman, not wanting to make eye contact.

The woman gasped, "AJ" she said, cackling.

Eight scoffed lightly, stepping next to her partner and glancing at the Handler in front.

"You know, you two are starting to fill out those tight little shorts and pants of yours." The woman praised the two.

But the teen-adult assassins still stood speechless, both of them standing tall with their hands deep in their pockets.

"Why so quiet? Thought you two would be buzzing after this morning's slaughter." the handler giggled. "Especially you, Eight." she looked over at the girl.

In response, she just rolled her eyes, sighing and wishing to be done with this conversation and just go back home.

"All this killing.. We're done with it." Five stated, his lips forming a thin line, his jaw clenched tight.

"What?" the woman looked at them, stunned. "Am I supposed to take that seriously?"

"What we did today, we did for our family." the boy barked his words.

"We did it to save the world." Eight backed him up.

"Please. Spare me your little assassins with the hearts of gold routine, will you?" the woman sighed, annoyed with their little speech.

But the two didn't budge, their eyes squinted, bodies tensed up.

"Here. Per our agreement, this will get you and your siblings back to 2019." she handed the boy the briefcase. "You have 90 minutes." she stated before attempting to walk away.

Suddenly, the ex assassins' eyes widened, shocked and confused about the time limit they've been given.

"What?" Eight picked up her step, following the woman.

"You said nothing about a time limit." Five picked up his pace as well.

"Actually, you have 89 minutes and 30 seconds. Better hurry." the woman smiled innocently.

"This is impossible, okay? Our siblings are scattered across the city." the boy freaked out.

"Nothing's impossible. You two proved that this morning when you killed the board."

"We need more time." Eight stated.

"Any more time, and people will start asking questions. The sooner you get home and out of this time period, the better off we'll both be, so, ticktock, ticktock." the woman said.
