Fire

Crusted eyes and blurry vision
I force one open to glance outside
Fire on the horizon and smoke in the sky
An apocalyptic picture
Blazing watercolors behind a grey blanket
Do I want to rise and face the day
Or in my restless slumber stay
Safe from the omnipresent rage
The warmth of a world on fire kisses
Nature and lives devoured
I guess there is no escape
For when I close my eyes at night
I still see that somber glow
Flash burned into memory
Brittle and breaking retinal cords
Is the road the worldly fire follows
Soon there will be no path for it to travel
Crumbled and charred
But I will be safe to sleep
When I can no longer see
The inferno that always follows me.
