Charlie

Jules just stared at me in complete shock, bewildered by everything I had just told her. And I mean I told her everything. After a few seconds, she puffed on her third cigarette of the night, her hands trembled as she moved, her breathe was slow and nervous. It's been a few hours or so, so I was aware that I needed to leave soon.

"Oh my, that is a lot of information to process at one time", She said quietly before turning to check on James who was still tucked up asleep in the arm chair he had dragged over to her bed, a bottle of water clutched in his hand as he snored quietly. I nodded at her with widened eyes, staring for any sense of a response.

"And Sam? Does she know?", She asked me with her eyebrows raised before I nodded once more. She shook her head quickly and turned to face me fully.

"Do you need my help kiddo? You know I'm good at disappearing", She said with a sad smile as I shook my head, unsure if I would need it just yet. Jules is a very strong woman, the strongest and smartest one I have ever met, and her past has always been trying to catch up with her, however she has always managed to stay far a head, but that was because she was careful, she knew what she needed to do to survive. To keep James safe but I will think about that later.

"I know you are", I replied softly with a smile. "But I still don't know the whole situation, the only reason I didn't tell my brother and cousin about you guys and what actually happened is that I don't know how they will react, I don't know them well enough", I said calmly as she nodded, air travelling quickly through her nose. She was nervous, seemingly scared which is something I didn't know she was even capable of. I realise now how much she has protected me throughout the years.

"What do you want me to do? In fact, what do you need me to do?", She asked me as she put out her cigarette and gave me a smile, holding onto both of my hands gently to give me some reassurance. I just shook my head with a small smile back, unsure myself for a moment.

"I need you to leave", I asked her quietly as she gasped quietly, her eyes widening once again.

"Leave? Leave you and Sam?", She questioned before she let go of my hands and walked up down in the hospital room, pacing rapidly. She continued to shake her head as a hand went to her chin, as though she was trying to think of a solution.

"I can't leave you two to fend for yourselves, these people seem dangerous, and I will not leave my children alone", She said out loud, before pausing after she realised what she said, a tear leaving her eye. I turned to her quickly as I got up and hugged her, crying softly as she hugged me tightly, stroking my hair as she shushed me quietly.

"It's alright Charlie, and as much as I hate the fact you didn't know this already, that you didn't know I have thought of you both as my own annoys me, we don't have time right now, but we will later", She said with a grin, her eyes becoming wrinkled at the side as her own eyes were glossed over. I grinned at her and nodded before she sat back down onto her bed, wiping her eyes and sniffling.

"What do you think?", I asked her after a few seconds of silence as she smiled weakly and shrugged slowly.

"I don't know, you know them better than I do", She replied as I nodded, but I didn't know them whatsoever.  I didn't know what they were going to do, if they were going to accept them and trust that they will not betray the family , or will be wary of them and do something drastic.

"I think I should go back home to Sam, she is probably wondering where I am by now and I think I need to get to know my family more, I have a plane in the morning", I said with a smile as she nodded in agreement although she looked wary of letting me go back.
