Picking Sides

Sitting in Paul's empty home was starting to get boring. I'd already cleaned up what needed cleaning up, and now I was waiting for Paul to come back from some kind of pack meeting.

When Paul did come home, well after midnight, I was there, waiting to talk to him.

"Baby," He said softly, looking over his clean house. "You didn't have to clean up. And what are you doing up? You know you don't have to wait up for me."

"I just needed some peace of mind." I sighed softly. "I just... Did your pack meeting have to do with Bella?"

"Baby, we don't have to talk about it right now." Paul said softly.

"No, I want to talk about it now." I said sternly. "I want to know what's going on with my sister."

"Sam..." Paul sighed, running a hand over his face. "Baby, I'm sorry, but we can't let Bella bring that monster into this world."

"Paul." I sucked in a breath, taking a step back away from Paul. "You can't... You can't seriously be thinking about taking Bella out."

"It's the only way." Paul stated as though it was fact. I took another step back from Paul, spinning on my heel and grabbing my packed bag of clothes. "Where are you going? Don't leave, baby, please."

"I have to." I whispered. "She's my sister."

"Don't do this." Paul whimpered.

"Good bye, Paul." I whispered, throwing my bag over my shoulder and dumping it off in the cab of my truck.

"Baby." Paul called from the door. "Please, don't go."

I climbed into the driver's side of my truck, pulling off and hightailing it back to the Cullen's residence.

"Oh, great." Leah huffed as soon as I hopped out of the truck. "Did you bring Paul with you?"

Before I could answer, a pained howl filled the air, causing my chest to heave.

"Lena?" Leah sounded panicked now. "Oh, shit. Lena! What happened?"

"I chose Bella." I whimpered, placing a hand against the beating heart in my chest. Another pained howl sounded through the trees, sending me crashing to my knees. "It hurts, Leah."

"I've got you." Leah said softly, running a hand across my back. "Jacob!"

"Come on." Jacob sounded, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "Come inside, Lena. I'm so sorry."

"It's okay." I offered a weak smile. "As long as you protect Bella and her baby."

"We will." Seth spoke. "We promise."

"Sam's lost the element of surprise, and he doesn't want to take you on outnumbered." Jacob started. "So, he's not gonna come at you head on. He's got the place surrounded and he'll wait for his opportunity."

"We won't get through without a fight." Emmett said.

"No fights." Carlisle shook his head. "We won't be the ones to break the treaty."

"The treaty is void, at least in Sam's mind." Jacob sighed.

"Not in ours." Esme said softly.

"Carlisle, no one's hunted for weeks." Emmett reminded, looking down at his patriarch.

"We'll make do." Esme suggested.

"You've done us a great service, Jacob, thank you." Carlisle spoke, nodding at Jake.
