Sinn's POV...
It was probably the third time he came around. I was standing in the kitchen, watching them. His back was to me so I could only see Jasmine's face. Her smile was brighter these days. She looks at him with adoration, like he's a superhero.
She plays it off but I know how much she'd break if he changed his mind about rekindling with her. How could he hate her for so long and then want to be by her side all of a sudden?
I didn't believe this act he was putting up. It was too good to be true. I couldn't let him come in here and give her false hope, then ruin everything the moment she thinks they're okay.
"Hey," I called after him just before he got into his car. He turned around and pulled out a cigarette as I approached him.
"What do you need, son?"
"Don't call me that," I scoffed.
"Alrighty," He sighed and smiled, "What do you need?"
"If you're here to get her hopes up and ditch when she needs you most, you can get the fuck out of her life right now," I said. "You're here because she's still got faith in a deadbeat, not because I think you can take care of her. She's been through enough."
"I'm here to make amends for lost time, Sinn," He said. I couldn't believe the sincerity in his tone.
"What made you realize you were so shitty?"
"When she got married to you," He took a puff of the cigarette in his hands and blew it out with a heavy breath as he looked down at the ground. He actually seemed ashamed of himself, "I blamed the kid for her mother's death and kept myself drunk and busy so I wouldn't have to face her."
"I could see that," I muttered.
"But she took care of me every time. She made sure I ate, got into bed, and took pills the next morning for my headache knowing it would repeat every night." He paused for a moment, looking like he was reminiscing, "Then she left and I realized how much she did for me. I could ignore her because I knew she'd always be there. But she wasn't anymore."
He rubbed his face with his hand, "When I got told she was on her deathbed, I couldn't believe it. I regretted the past ten years I put her through and wished I had the right to see her. I was scared she'd be gone and I wouldn't be able to say goodbye. It's killing me that it took all of that for me to get my head straight."
He looked at me and stared into my eyes, "Look, I know I ain't got a good track record. But I'm trying to fix whatever I can. When she needs me, I'm going to be there, I can promise you that.
"We'll see. Just know if you hurt her again, I'll cut off your limbs." I muttered and walked off.
After that, I didn't watch the two of them so closely anymore. It didn't mean I wasn't still skeptical but I couldn't make decisions based off of Jasmine's relationship with her father. That was for her to decide.
The day I was leaving, he arrived with some suitcases and men. He, I could trust. His men were another story. That was until Jasmine came down with a big smile on her face. She greeted each of them with a hug, telling them she missed them.
They were about ten to twenty years older than her and basically raised her. So I reluctantly allowed it.
Her dad watched her, a remorseful look on his face. It must've felt shitty knowing his men were better father figures than he was.
"I love you," I murmured against her lips as she clung to me for dear life.
"I love you more," She whimpered and hid her face in my neck, trying to hide her tears.
