Eun-mi sometimes wondered if life was nothing but a series of built-up domino paths, splitting apart based on the angle or weight of a single push, and if there would ever be an end to it.
She had to wonder about it, as it made almost no sense how quickly the day changed. One moment, she and Yo-han had gotten the upper hand against Cha Gyeong-hui, thanks to So-yoon. The next, she and Yo-han were going on a sudden date at a way too cute cafe that may have fit her vibes but Yo-han stuck out like a dog in an all-cat room, and now they were getting ready to face Cha Gyeong-hui in the rain under the highway at some unknown spot. Honestly, with how many spy and mafia movies she's seen, Eun-mi was sure that Gyeong-hui was going to pull out a gun on one of them. Yo-han thought much the same and yet he still insisted on going.
"So you want her to shoot one of us? When we haven't gotten to an anniversary yet?" Eun-mi asked Yo-han with a frown on her face.
The sound of the rain hitting against the front window of Yo-han's car reminded her of the possible su*c*de mission they were on. She gripped at the seatbelt that was keeping her pressed to the passenger seat while staring at her boyfriend like he had lost his mind.
"And what anniversary have I missed when you make me celebrate every holiday and birthday with you? Or have you forgotten about my doctor telling you to lay off the cake?" Yo-han asked her in return with an easy-going smile on his face.
"Don't joke about this. I'm being serious here, Yo-han. I never want to see you get shot, deal with you being shot, or do anything involving a gun. My heart is too fragile for that and with my family history, I'll probably get a heart attack and die on the spot." Eun-mi snapped at him before turning away with a huff.
"Hey, hey, stop that. If we're banning talks about guns, then I'm also adding that we ban conversations about you dying in general." Yo-han told her, now frowning as well. He took one hand off of the wheel, grabbed her hand, lifted her hand up to his mouth, and kissed the palm of her hand repeatedly. "We'll be fine. Cha Gyeong-hui is a lot of things but she's not a killer who can just shoot whoever she doesn't like and not think about it. All we're going to do is warn her about challenging us, extend a white flag, and that's all."
"Since when are you merciful?" Eun-mi asked him, a small smile on her face after feeling her hand be kissed repeatedly.
"You've softened me a lot. Whether you acknowledge it or not, the truth is that you make me all soft and mushy." Yo-han answered her, being incredibly truthful.
He came up to the exit that they had to take to meet Gyeong-hui and turned the wheel to the left. Eun-mi slipped her hand out of his and began to unbuckle herself. Eun-mi looked down at her maroon red knee-high boots, which covered up a good chunk of her black jeans and stewed in her worry for a few moments more. Yo-han drove off the remainder of the highway onto the dirt path and kept straight until he came upon Cha Gyeong-hui's pristine white car. Eun-mi frowned upon seeing the short-haired woman who had caused her, Yo-han, Elijah, K, Ga-on, and so many other people so much pain and slept like a baby every night despite it.
