I woke up on a plastic hospital chair.
I checked the time; it was 2:25am.
Looking up, I saw a nurse stood by the door to a small hospital bedroom.
'You can see him now, Mr Bradley.'
I nodded, smiling weakly at her, and walked into the room.
Simon was asleep on the bed. His skin was ashy and pale, and there was a bulk around his ribs where they had wrapped a bandage.
I touched it gently, and brushed my fingers up along his chest to his face.
'Jesus, Simon.' I mumbled, feeling my eyes grow hot with tears.
He was breathing, finally, but it was slow and deep.
'Is he in a coma?' I asked the nurse beside me. She gave me a funny look.
'No, of course not. Just under anaesthetic.'
I let out a sigh of relief, as I held his hand in mine.
He was warm, his skin soft, and I could feel his heartbeat rushing through his hand into mine.
'He should be awake soon. But he can't leave for a couple of days, we need to look at the stitches and make sure they don't get infected.'
I nodded, my gaze still directed on the closed eyelids of my love.
'He's lucky, y'know. The knife only just missed his vital organs- if he had been sat only an inch round, he could have died.'
I bent to press my lips against his hands.
'You're going to be okay, Si.'
'I think you should go home, Mr Bradley. You look exhausted.'
I looked at her with tired, but hardened eyes.
'I'm not leaving till I know he can come with me.'
She smiled sympathetically, and left the room.
I sat with Simon. I couldn't pull my eyes from him.
Suddenly, three nurses came rushing in, and grabbed the bed.
'What's happening?' I asked, shooting them a worried glance.
'Calm down, love. We're moving him to another room.'
I fell back in the chair, relieved.
'Follow us.'
I followed them into the room, tired, but as happy as I could be that he was going to be okay.
