'Do you want anything? A drink, something to eat?'
'Josh, you know usually I would massively take advantage of you at my beck and call, but I've been out of hospital for at least a week now.'
'I know, but I still worry!'
'Don't. I'm fine. The stitches are out now, so we can move on.'
I nodded, and sat next to him, my hand around his.
'Simon...'
I realised suddenly what I needed to say. I grabbed his empty can of Fanta from the table and began to twist at the tab on the top distractedly.
'Being without you, both during those few months and when you were in hospital, has made me realise... Made me realise how much I need you. How much I need to protect you.'
He looked up at me, frowning.
'Josh?'
'I know that our... 'relationship' has always been rocky. Things haven't exactly ran smoothly. We came out together in a spontaneous, awkward, messy way, and if I'm honest, I think everything for us has been like that.'
I saw the confusion in his gaze.
'But the thing is, I think that's right. I think it's that aspect of it that makes it us, that makes it passionate.'
'Josh, please... what is this?'
The tab was fully off the can, and I twisted it between my fingers.
'I just... I like to keep up a trend.'
With a deep breath, I moved from the sofa onto the floor, propped up one knee.
'Here's to messy, and to spontaneous, and to unplanned.'
'Josh...' he breathed, his mouth lifting in a smile as I held out the tab.
'Will you marry me?'
He laughed, and held out his hand.
'Yes. But only if you come back with a better ring.'
I grinned, my heart soaring in my chest, and gently eased the tab onto his finger.
'Fuck.' he laughed, when I got to his knuckle and realised the small, silver 'ring' wouldn't fit any further.
'I think it's stuck.' I admitted, trying hard not to laugh.
'I'll get some soap.' he said, standing up.
'Oh, by the way, Josh?'
I looked up at him.
'I love you.
Even if I might now have to get my finger surgically removed.'
