Simon woke up on the 23rd of September, 12:34pm. I know, because I was awake in the hospital bed beside him.
The nurses wheeled him into a bigger room, so I could share it with him- in a separate bed, of course.
It meant that I could finally get some sleep, but still watch out for Simon.
He woke up, obviously groggy and confused, and the first thing he did was look at me.
'What?'
His voice was croaky, rough as though he'd swallowed gravel.
'Hospital.' I breathed.
'Why?'
'You were stabbed.'
'Were you there?'
I nodded mutely, suddenly struck shy in front of him. He looked away, biting his lip, and when he looked back there were tears in his eyes.
'I can't believe you had to see that.'
I smiled painfully.
'If you're fine, it's fine.'
Lies.
The nightmares that had attacked my dreams when Simon first left returned whilst he was out. Paralysing, chilling nightmares that left me in cold sweats, surrounded by nurses who thought the world was crashing around my head.
Without him, it was.
They tried to prescribe a sleeping pill, but I knew no drug could fully remove the image of Simon, blood on his shirt and my hands, from my mind. It was stuck, a constant loop.
'Can I go home?' he whispered.
'Soon.'
'With you?'
'Always with me.'
He smiled them, and reached his hand across the small gap between our beds. I took his hand in mine. I felt the warmth from his palm rush into my skin, and I swear his heartbeat came with it.
He was back asleep in seconds.
'All I have ever wanted is to feel safe.'
I mumbled it as I watched him breathing.
'All you have ever done is make me feel safe.'
I fell asleep next to him.
I didn't have a single dream.
Safe, at last, with him.~~
