Steak Drama

Ellie turned round to check on the steaks. Seeing they were ready on one side, she flipped them over and put some chips into the oven to cook.

"Well," began Jason. "We went on a few dates and I thought things were going well between us."

Ellie nodded; he'd told her about every single date in explicit detail as soon as they'd concluded. This usually meant a phone call at two o'clock in the morning, having to spend the next hour listening to her loved-up brother go on about how wonderful this person was.

Jason looked out of the kitchen window, playing the love-struck actor in his own overly dramatic movie. "We went on a date last month to a gourmet steak restaurant. I loved steak, she loved steak. It was the perfect place for us."

Doing her best not to roll her eyes, Ellie simply nodded and tried to maintain the concerned look on her face.

"But as soon as we got our steaks, she complained that it was too rare for her. It turns out she likes her steaks well-done." He looked back at his sister, real tears shining in his eyes.

"What's the issue with that?" Ellie asked cautiously.

"Well-done is basically charcoal! Burnt! Pure carbon! I can't be with someone who thinks that it's ok to ruin a good steak like that with having it cooked well-done." He wiped his eyes on his t-shirt, his bottom lip trembling.

"But I really, really like her sis. I don't know what to do." He put his beer bottle down on the counter and wrapped his arms tightly around Ellie.

"Oh you silly thing," she said, rubbing his back in an attempt to comfort him.

"She breaks my one and only rule but I think I love her," Jason mumbled, crying into Ellie's shoulder.

The oven timer started to beep, surprising both of them. "We'll talk about it over dinner, ok?" Ellie passed his beer bottle back to him and put on her oven gloves. Jason nodded and took a sip of beer.

"Sounds good," he said, walking into the dining room.
