I'm trying as hard as I can and I still can't bring myself to pull my eyes away from her. She's going to notice if I don't, but right now I'm not thinking about that. I just want to look at her, admire her, basically just dote on her every move. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear but the second she leans her head back down in falls free again. My fingers itch to put it back in it's place - it hides some of her pretty face from me, which is something I don't want.
She flips the page of the book she's reading and glances up at the blue sky, smiling to herself. She doesn't even know how lovely she is. Right here, in a park full of students eating their lunches and being loud, she still finds the peace and concentration required to read. And there's another thing to add to the ever growing list of why I'm completely, utterly and foolishly in love with her.
"Earth to Luke?" Calum greets me, waving his hand in front of my face as he sits down across from me. I break out of my daydream to face him. Of course he's smirking.
"Just go say hey. You're like her best friend, you can't go all shy now you've realised that you're into her." He tells me matter-of-factly.
I shrug, "I was shy before, when I first met her. Then I got over it for a bit and now it's happening again. She makes me nervous."
"She didn't before."
"Are you kidding me?" I laugh, half heartedly grinning at him. "That girl makes me more nervous than anything in the world. She's fearless, she's brave, and she utterly terrifies me. It's a good nervous, but it's still nervous."
Calum is smiling, and I don't know why. I haven't given him anything to gloat over. "Would you listen at yourself? The way you talk about her, you're so into her it hurts me. Please just go talk to her."
"Cal I'm more than just into her. I'm in love with her, alright? That's why my nerves have gotten so bad. Because this entire time I've been friends with her I've been repressing the shit out of my feelings and now I've realised them and they're more than just a stupid crush. And I still haven't properly come to terms with it all. I'm still finding new reasons to fall for her, so I can't just go and talk to her. It's too hard, because I'm just going to fall more. And she doesn't like me how I like her. If I talk to her anymore it's just going to hurt me."
He shakes his head, frowning. "You're being an idiot. You're both so oblivious."
He stands up and starts heading in the direction of [Y/N], and already I can feel my heart start to pound. What the hell is he doing?
He sits down across from her and they talk for a little while, before Cal pretends to scour the area and happens upon me. He acts surprised as he shouts my name and beckons for me to join them. Great.
I slide down into the seat next to [Y/N], my entire body feeling weak. She brushes up against me, sending a shock pulsing through my veins. Oh god.
Calum fakes conversation for five more minutes before he makes up some shit about being late for a class and disappears.
I glance over at [Y/N]'s book on the table. Oh look, another reason to love her. "You're reading Catcher in the Rye? I love that book."
Her face lights up. "It's my favourite!" She exclaims, then giggles. "Sorry, that was a bit over enthusiastic. I just really love this book."
What am I supposed to say to her? Also, how have we been friends for this long and it's never come up that we have the same favourite book? I push the thought to the back of my mind - now isn't the time.
"Uh, Luke?" She questions, breaking the silence.
"Yeah?" I reply. My mouth feels dry and I have a knot at the back of my throat. I'm getting the feeling that whatever's coming next isn't going to be good.
"Have I..." she looks down at her hands nervously, making her hair fall around her face. She look back up, and I can't resist tucking a strand behind her ear, making her blush. She seems to have forgotten that she was speaking.
"Have you...?" I say, hoping to jog her memory. She blushes again but continues. "Have I don't something to offend you? I feel like you're avoiding me."
My heart is hammering. It feels like it's about to explode out of my chest, and to make things worse my mouth is dryer than ever. My hands start to shake, so I shove them into my jacket pockets. This is impossible.
"No!" I almost shout, shaking my head vigorously. "No of course you haven't!"
She smiles briefly. "Then what is it? Why are you keeping your distance?"
She looks upset. Like, genuinely upset. I have to fix this. I can't let her be sad. She deserves nothing but happiness all of the time.
"It's not that. It's..." I consider telling her the truth. The truth is the only thing that's going to make her feel better, to make her know that I'm not avoiding her.
I take a deep breath. "The reason I've seemed distant is because I love you and I have an impossible time being around you knowing you don't feel the same." I babble, barely taking breaths between words.
[Y/N] looks at me incredulously, as if she can't believe that I just said that.
Her lips are on mine in seconds. It's unexpected and sudden and rushed but it's still perfect. She pulls away and I'm already desperate for more.
"You really can't see how much I like you, can you?" She giggles. Impulsively, I lean in and bring our lips together again.
"Let me take you on a date tonight." I whisper over her lips.
She smiles. "Pick me up at 7."
