"I can't, Ash. You know I can't. I have work." You sigh, the last bit of happiness draining from your body as his smile drops.
"You always have work," he mutters, doing his best to hide his disappointment with anger. "I feel like we're barely even friends anymore."
A pang of guilt hits you, but you don't say anything. He slams his glass down on the bar, and you still don't say anything. Then he leaves without saying goodbye, and you don't shout after him. It's not like there's anything you can do.

You can't get Ashton and his stupid party out of your mind. He has parties all the time - why is this one special? He always tells you so late so you never have time to book the day off, so how is this your fault? You sigh frustratedly. If this isn't your fault, then why are you so upset about it?
"Are you okay love?" A customer asks from across the bar. You shrug and frown, prompting the man to ask you to explain your problems.

Once you've finished ranting to him, he grins at you cheekily. "It sounds like this boy likes you. Or that you like him at least."
You feel your face heat up and immediately start denying his accusation, but he just smirks. "Do you not hear the way you talk about him?" He chuckles, raising his eyebrows.
"I- uh- i-" you stutter, unable to form a coherent thought. Surely he can't be right? You don't even want to think about it.
"There will always be jobs, honey, but love doesn't come around all that often." He states, and you know he's right. But you don't love Ashton - do you? You've been friends for a lifetime, and you've never thought about him like that. Unless... what if you've just never allowed yourself to think about him in that way? That can't be possible.
"Thank you," you whisper, still unable to gather your thoughts. Before you do anything else, you make the man a drink as a thank you for his advice.
Then the plan starts to form in your head.
---
"Hey, [Y/BF/N]," you say into your phone. "Are you free? I need a favour."
---
Twenty minutes later your best friend arrives to take over your shift at the bar. You rush into the office to find your boss and explain to her how [Y/BF/N] is doing another shift for you.
"Also, Gen, could we have a quick word?"
"Of course we can love," she responds with a smile.
"Is there any chance of me having two days off a week instead of just half a day on a Sunday? If you can only take it down to one that's fine too, but to be honest with you working this much is really getting on top of me and I feel like I'm not at my best without much rest." You ramble, rushing out your words to make sure you get them all out.
Gen smiles and nods. "Of course you can, [Y/N]. You're one of our best workers and you do so much for us, so I will sort that out for you. Now get going!" She chuckles.

---

You burst through the front door of Ashton's house and you're quickly met with the smell of booze mixed with sweat. Nice. There's a lot of people here and it's very loud, but you're set on finding Ashton.
After asking nearly everyone at the party if they had seen him, you're left confused. It seems like he's not here. Feeling slightly defeated, you decide to check one last place. You know it's a long shot, but you never know.

Ashton's room is empty, but what you hadn't noticed when you checked in here was the open window. Smiling slightly, you climb out and clamber up the metal steps. A full grin breaks out on your face when you reach the top and see him at the other side of the roof.
He immediately gets up when he notices you, a bewildered look across his face.
"[Y/N]? What're you doing here?" He shouts across the roof as you walk towards him.
Without answering his question, you continue walking. He looks even more confused when you don't reply, but not as confused as when you close the gap between the two of you by pressing your lips to his. His lips respond to yours instantly, and his arms wrap around you protectively.
"What was that for?" He whispers, leaning his forehead on yours.
"I'm in love with you, Ashton." You tell him, not wasting another second contemplating it.
His eyes widen before a wide smile brightens his face. "I love you too, [Y/N]. I always have. B-but what made you realise this?"
You grin. "I couldn't get you off my mind, and I felt so bad about missing your party. A customer asked me what was wrong, so I told him everything. And he told me that I was in love with you, and then I realise that he was right. And then I got [Y/BF/N] to cover my shift and I asked for two days a week off. I want to spend all my time with you Ash, and now I've got more free days." You blurt, barely stopping for breath. "And I'm sorry for being so busy. I want that to stop now. I only want to be busy with you, okay?"
Ashton can't stop the smile from breaking out on his face anymore than you can stop yourself kissing him again.
"Okay," he mumbles onto your lips. "Okay, I like that idea a lot."
