Chapter 45

"So, is it our turn to talk now?" It was Cormac who spoke. Pinatong niya ang kaniyang mga siko sa mesa at pinagsaklop ang mga kamay nito.

"Leander, right?" umpisa ni Carver. Oh God. I shook my head in disbelief at pinatong ang aking kamay sa balikat ni Leander to assure him. Kinakabahan na nga 'yong tao, inaasar pa nila.

"Hey, it's okay. You can just ignore them if you like." I leaned closer to him and whispered. Leander chuckled nervously at sinagot naman ako.

"I can't do that to your family." he whispered in return.

I heard somebody cleared their throat. I couldn't see who was it since I was facing Leander.

"Excuse me, Ate Z. But can we have a moment alone with Doctor Leander here?" Singit naman ni Cillian.

I gave him a fake smile as a response at muling bumulong kay Leander.

"Alis lang ako saglit. Can you survive on your own for thirty seconds?" I said in a playful manner. Umayos ako nang tayo at tinapunan nang masamang tingin ang aking mga pinsan. I gestured a slice in the neck and mouthed them the words 'You're all dead to me'

But they only snickered at me at pinaalis na ako. Naglakad na ako palabas nang meeting hall pero bago pa man ako tuluyang makalayo ay narinig ko ang isang tanong ni Carver sa kaniya.

"So what's the real deal between you and my sister?"

I was not able to hear Leander's response dahil naisara ko na ang pinto. I went straight to my room upstairs and took my moment to scan the surrounding.

This is where I used to stay before, when my parents were still alive. It's been a year and six months since I last stayed here for the night.

My room here is big. There's a door beside my walk-in closet and that door leads to my study area. It's spacious, there's a big wooden chair at the center and the walls are covered with book shelves.

I miss here.

Lumabas ako nang aking Study. I opened my big double-door wardrobe at bumungad sa akin ang iba't-ibang klase ng mga armas. I opened the first drawer where my knives are hidden. I picked up my stiletto knife at sinarang muli ang aparador.

My initials were engraved on the case of this knife.

Bumaba ako nang hagdan at tinahak ang daan papuntang meeting hall. Siguro naman ay tapos na nilang gisahin si Leander.

I opened the door discreetly at nakinig lamang sa kanilang pag-uusap. Naabutan kong sunod-sunod nilang pinaulanan nang tanong si Leander tungkol sa aming dalawa.

"So, how did you manage to tame our lioness?"

"Seryoso ka ba sa kapatid ko? O baka naman ginagamit mo lang siya for your own benefit?"

"Ngayong alam mo na ang lahat ng ginawa ni Schwyler, don't ever think of betraying her. Dahil kami ang unang makakalaban mo."

"So tell us Doc, how did you confess?"

Ilan lamang 'yan sa mga tanong na naabutan ko. They did not even settle down when they saw me enter the hall. Mukhang mas lalo pa nila akong ininis at mas pinuno pa nila ng tanong si Leander.

I walked behind Leander's seat and unsheathed my knife. I closed my eyes and aimed for the corkboard across me. I threw my stiletto knife and it made a sound as soon as it hit the board. They went silent immediately.

I sat on the armrest of Leander's chair and gave him a quick side hug.

"You did well on holding out that long." I whispered.
