delirious

at four fifteen a.m. that same night

i knocked on the latticed window

of jasey rae’s room.

her room was dark

but i could smell the smoke

seeping from the cracks

and i knew that she was not asleep.

she was somewhere inside

leaning against her door

as she broke seventy-eight rules all in one night.

“what the hell are you doing here

ashton irwin?”

she whispered as she let me in anyway

making me promise

that sally won’t walk in

on whatever we were doing.

i just laughed

and climbed into her creaking bed

that had splinters out at all the ends.

“come here, jasey rae.”

i took her in my arms

and she pulled the small, thin covers

over both of us.

“you’re not leaving me, right?”

she asked me and i pulled her close.

“never, jasey rae.

never.”

i knew she’d ask why but if i’m honest

jasey was too good to leave.

she was just an unprecedented little girl

with complexities left for us to unravel

and her heart a lock of clandestine.

“we all have our flaws

we all have our mistakes

all the sins we regret.

but i love you, jasey rae.

i love you so damn much

and believe me when i tell you

i’d break all the rules for you.”

i felt a warm tear hit my arm and i kissed her.

 “i love you, ashton.”
