after twenty-one and a half days

my phone rang-

the same sad song i have had on repeat-

for the first time.

as i laid on my bed, staring at the holes

of the colours in the ellipses

emblazoned across my sheets,

i thought hard as the phone kept ringing.

i thought about how i was empty

because when jasey left me

she took all of me

for a journey

she did not tell me about.

i couldn't answer my phone

because i knew it wasn't her.

it wouldn't be worth answering

unless it was her voice on the other end.

i took a small glance at the screen and i was right:

it was not jasey.

it was boring old Christopher

from my tuesday sessions.

i answered it

because he called forty times.

it was the best and worst decision

i have ever made.

"ashton.

where have you been?

i have tried to reach you for fifteen days."

he had asked.

"yes?"

and that was all i replied

as i picked at my fingers.

"this is about jasey.

you two were close, i could see."

"yes."

i said again

my heart breaking.

i was hopelessly in love

with demented jasey rae

who left me.

"good, because she's

in young care hospital.

she's waiting for you

so i suggest you get your ass

down there before it's too late."
