You're a college student studying at Lynchburg College in Virginia. It's a nice place, with lots of thing to do and see. Historic gardens, riverfront parks, hiking trails, and a lot of history. Over all, it's a beautiful city that you're glad to be apart of.

You absolutely love the James River, the sound it makes as it rushes past, the smell of local bakeries and restaurants as you walk beside it.

Your favourite restaurant is Olive Garden on 4038 Wards Road, and you try to go there whenever your budget allows.

But, right now you talk to your roommate. She's bragging about her boyfriend, and their outfits for the Masquerade Ball that's happening tonight.

Frankly, you're not too excited, but you swore that you'd go with her. You picked out a simple, yet elegant f/c dress and a matching mask to wear.

You groan and roll your eyes, not even pretending to listen to her as you skim through the pages of the book in your lap. It's a book for History Class on famous bank robberies. Frankly you couldn't be less interesting in it, but hey, it beats listening to your roommate's speech.

"-and everyone's gonna be there! I'm so excited! Your dress is absolutely gorgeous, and mine is too of course, but I bet you'll attract a boyfriend with that dress! Y/n? Are you listening?" She snaps her hand infant of your face a few times, and you look up.

"What? I'm reading here!"

"As I was saying," she continues, casting you a glare, "You look amazing! Everybody's gonna be checking you out."

You try to stifle a smile, "You really think so?"

"Yeah! You're a total guy-magnet in that dress!"

You smile fully, and cast your book aside. An hour till the ball. Not a lot to do, so you spray some perfume on and listen to your roomie gossip.

An hour flies by, and before you know it, she's dragging you out of the room and towards the ballroom. You giggle and follow her, your dress trailing behind you magnificently. Happily, you clutch her arm as you both run into the room.

There's people everywhere, all dressed up in nice outfits. Most of them are twirling on the dance floor, but there are a few people around some tables. My roommate sees her boyfriend and runs over to him, leaving me alone, surrounded by other masked people.

Everyone seems to have a dance partner except you, so you stand there for awhile, waiting for someone to sweep you onto the dance floor.

After half an hour of standing, you give up and walk to an empty table. You plunk your head on the tabletop and fight back tears.

Of course this would happen! Your roommate seemed to think that you'd have guys fawning all over you, but she was so wrong.

You take off the mask you were wearing and toss it to the floor. I'm leaving this dump! But before you can a voice interrupts.

"Excuse me miss? Would you care to dance?"

You look up, wondering if the man could be talking to you. He wears a handsome green suit with an equally green bowler hat. A gloved hand reaches for yours, and you smile shyly before taking it.

"I'd love to."

He pulls you into the dancing and twirls you around to the fast-paced music. His faint smile is mysterious and his eyes are brimming with queries.
