July 11 Sunday
I stare at my phone again. 12:49 pm. My head glances back at my novel and then I zone out. Today seems like a surprisingly slow day. Normally something crazy or fun happens by now. I haven't even seen any of the guys this morning come to think of it. "Woohoo, paintball day!" Jay jumps in through the door in excitement. Spoke too soon. I look up from my book and stare at him in confusion. "Paintball day?" He turns his head toward my direction with an enthusiastic look. "Paintball day! Almost everyone at camp plays a game of paintball. It's normally 3 people in a team. Two cabins go at a time. It's us and cabin 15 that's going together. The players get set up into teams at random. So, there will be 4 teams with 3 people. Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. I'm so excited!" My spirits and eagerness have a sudden boost of pep. "That sounds fun. When is it?" Jay lifted me by my arm and I dropped my book. My booook. Rip. "It starts at one so we gotta hurry."
We finally made it. Why did it have to be so far from the cabin area? "Come on Y/n in here." Jay and I run into a huge tent that had a camo beige pattern on the outside of it. On the inside was a few rows of wooden benches and a podium in the front of all of them. We sat on a bench in the second to last row. I look around and see some of my cabin mates and other random campers. "Good, everyone is here now. Just in the nick of time too. So, hello everyone. I will be your referee for this game today. The game is capture the flag paintball. Your goal is to get at least 1 of the team flags back to your base. If all of your teammates are shot your team will be disqualified and automatically lose. The strategy you choose to do is up to you and your team. Any questions?" I see Kido slightly raise his hand. Hmm, I thought he had his own cabin. "Do we win anything if we actually win?" The instructor nods. "Your team will get to sleep in the mansion cabin from across the lake for 3 days. It has its own chef there to cook you anything you desire. It also has a hot tub, an indoor swimming pool, an indoor theater, a fully stocked library, a gaming room and many more spectacular things inside." Wow ... I really want to win... So badly. No, I need to win. For the library! Also the hot tub and gaming room. "Any more questions?... No... Good. As for teams I will walk around with a jar full of popsicle sticks that will say a color. Please start equipping yourself over there once you get your color." He points to the 4 tables lined up with equipment of the colors Jay told me.
The instructor made his way around the room with the jar. The male stands in front of me the jar held out. I close my eyes and carefully pick a stick. Woohoo, I got blue. I grip the stick and look around for the people on my team. I feel a poke on my shoulder. "Hey, teammate." Tristan holds up a stick that also has 'blue' written on it. "Cool, I'm glad I got partnered with someone I know." I stand up and head over to the blue equipment table. I put on the camo jumpsuit and safety vest. "Who else is on our team?" I see a shadow walk past me. "Alex. I guess you're on our team." He nods his head loading up. I grab a walkie-talkie and put it in my deep pockets. "Y/n. Don't worry, I got this in the bag. My uncle used to take me shooting with him when he would practice at the shooting range for work. We're practically going win." Wow, he sounds very self-assured. He's a great asset for this team. "Ready? Come on guys."
We rush to the starting gate fully loaded and prepared. I look at the other teams with determination in their eyes. I glance over at Kido intensely staring over at me. He quickly turns his head the opposite way and starts blushing. Suddenly 3 more instructors emerge from the gate. The one wearing blue army gloves walks over to us. "Follow me." We all walk through the gate and follow the tall black-haired man. As we keep walking I see a blue flag and we approach it. "This is your flag. You will protect it from other teams. If someone captures it you are out. If all of you are shot, you're out. Play safe. You will hear a gun go off in about 5 minutes, that is the starting noise. Make a plan while you wait. Most importantly have fun. Questions?" I nod. "If everyone is out on our team how will we know?" "You guys have walkie-talkies. Just notify each-other when one of you are out. I'll be going now. Good luck." He starts walking off back to start.
"Y/n and I will stay here and keep watch." Tristan puts his hand on my shoulder. "No, I think y/n should go with me for back-up." Alex takes my arm and pulls me toward him. "It would make more sense if we had more people here. If our teams flag is captured we're out and I could get shot but then can't doing anything while they walk away with our flag." Tristan takes my hand and pulls me in his direction. "Well, what if I'm shot! I'm the one who needs back-up." Why is this becoming a habit? "Guys! I'll stay here. Tristan, you stay here with me as well. Alex your good at shooting, you can go alone. I trust you." We hear an echoing gunshot and thus the game begins.
