Chapter 66: Caught Me On A Bad Day

{D.K}

Dakota couldn't help herself after Elijah called to update her on how everything was going while he and Camille were watching over her child. The whole time he spoke all she could hear was her baby crying. "'lijah she's hungry."

       "She just had a bottle."

       "Half or whole?"

       "Half."

"Give her the rest and play soft music, she likes that."

After a few beats of shuffling and gently cooing from the original vampire, there was finally silence on the receiving end of the phone. "Thank you," Elijah sighed, Dakota feeling as if she could see him rub his fingers against his closed lids.

Grabbing a duffle-bag, she started haphazardly throwing whatever clothes she saw in the drawers and threw them inside. "Where'd you say you were again?"

"You told me not to tell you, to keep Hope safe, remember?"

Slapping her palms on her clothed thighs, Dakota's brown eyes snapped over to the phone in annoyance. Of all the times they broke the rules, this one time they couldn't bend it, for a  reasonable cause of course but either way it was irritating. "I know she's safe with you, it's not personal. I'm just worried, better yet you should probably just hang up on me before I figure out where you are myself."

Elijah was abrupt with the ending of the call, Klaus coming behind his woman, subtly pulling the bag from her and placing her clothes back where they belonged. "Where exactly were you planning on going?"

       "To see Hope."

"Sweetheart, we left Hope for her own safety. You know we can't go to her right now."

Plopping down on their shared bed, Dakota buried her hands in her hair, head down and facing her lap, she couldn't help but let her thoughts overwhelm her. So many months and even maybe years ago she was so different that being in this position, scared for a child she never thought she'd be given. She felt overwhelmed and completely helpless, emotions she never thought she could feel after so many years of mischief. "Do you think we made a mistake? I love my baby but did I make a mistake thinking I could have it all? Being a vampire and a mother—a wife even. Was I asking for too much to have it all at once?"

Pulling her smaller frame into his lap, Klaus gently brushed pieces of her hair from her face, her eyebrows furrowed with intense thought. Two fingers lifted and soothed the area with a swipe, blue irises meeting stormy brown ones. "Complications doesn't mean it won't mean, it means it'll be harder but when those complications disappear we will have everything we've ever wanted and more."

"I know but the setbacks keep coming at us. How much longer can she wait for her parents?"

       "Not much longer."

Taking a double-glance at Niklaus, Dakota squinted her eyes up at him. "You sound awfully confident. Are you planning something?"

"As a matter of face, I am."

Looking oddly proud of himself, Klaus simply looked at his lover with his signature smirk adorning his blonde-stubbled jaw. "Care to share? I am not the biggest fan of surprises."

Moving to stand, he left a hand outstretched to her, an invitation she was hesitant to accept but did anyway. "You'll enjoy this one." Tugging her along behind him, she was led down the stairs where she was met with a dirtied Elijah and a joyful Camille bouncing gently with Hope in her hands.

"Are you sure?" Contradicting her question, Dakota left her fiancé all too easily to scoop up the little version of her and her love. No matter the danger, Dakota couldn't help but feel completely at peace with her little bundle of heaven wriggling peacefully in her arms, tiny baby fingers and even smaller palms grabbing out for more of her mommy. "Actually don't answer that, I don't want to know."

"Don't fret, my love. I made a deal with a few people who are more than willing to protect our child."

"How did you manage that? Not to hurt your feelings, baby, but you don't have many friends."

Feigning momentary hurt, Klaus touched a hand to his chest but the expression quickly left his face when Hope reached a grabby hand out to him. Leaning into her loving touch, he whispered a response into Dakota's shoulder. "They did it for you, Oliver seemingly talked you up a bit in werewolf territory. All I had to do was mention you and Hope and the deal was sealed."

"Do I want to know what you owe in return?"

       "Not particularly, no."

Lifting to her tip-toes to press a kiss to his lips, the other two people in the room made themselves known with a clear of their throat. "I didn't forget about you, Mister. Come with me," Voice changing tones smoothly like butter, Dakota thanked Cami while walking backwards for her soon to be brother-in-law.

Once out of sight, Dakota couldn't help herself. "What's doing on with you?"

       "I don't think I follow?"

"Don't try to play me as stupid. I know you, Elijah." Pointing to the dirtied clothes he was wearing since his arrival and most likely during the ride, it was high unusual for the immaculate vampire with obsessive compulsive disorder. "What happened when we weren't there? Was it you and Camille?"

Turning his back to her, Elijah disappeared into the attached bathroom with a rag and a change of clothes. The sink went running for a few moments before he spoke. "I wish it was as simple as just Camille."

"You aren't making much sense, 'lijah."

"Does it ever bother you? Seeing Kol and Davina together?"

The randomness of the question threw Dakota off guard, completely confused as to why Kol and Davina would have anything to do with why he wasn't acting like himself. "Why would it bother me? Kol and I are just history, Niklaus and our baby is my future."

Elijah hummed, face rinsed and clothes fresh. "Do you ever think you picked the wrong brother?"

Catching on to whatever it was Elijah was trying to throw, Dakota scooted back, Hope still laying in her arms quietly babbling to herself. "Why are you asking me these questions?"

"Because you asked, Dakota. I didn't want to say this and complicate what we are but I think I am—"

"No! Don't say it, please don't. Whatever it is that you think you need to tell me don't." The hurt that spread across Elijah's face made her stop and restart. "Look, I understand why you would think you feel whatever you do for me but I know you really don't. You just see what you don't have and it's making you yearn for it."

"Thank you for that, Dakota. I appreciate that."

"Just hear me out, she's coming Elijah I promise. Your love is coming too, just wait for her, you'll know when it happens."

Resting her hand on his shoulder, Elijah nods at her, the words she provided satiating the longing for someone for the time being. "I'm sorry, I don't know what got into me."

"Don't worry about it, already forgotten."

Joining back with the rest of the family was the perfect remedy for their hardships, the love they all radiated was stronger than ever before. Klaus smiled down at the life before him, one he never thought he'd have and he swore he could feel like it would be this way forever.
