I Shall Not Pass Again This Way

“And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith . . . brotherly kindness.”

Someone has said, “Friend, when you come to the end of your pilgrimage, and you watch the sun go down for the last time, you will think precious little of money, or houses, or lands, or any honour or titles you may have picked up along the journey. More likely in those last hours  what will comfort you the most will be the memories of little kindnesses you have done, the gentle words you have spoken, the burdens shouldered for others, and the friendly bits of spiritual advice you have given along the way.”

Stephen Grellet has written, “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or ay kindness I can show to any fellow human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”   - anonymous

The bread that bringeth strength I want to give;

The water pure that bids the thirsty live;

I want to help the fainting day by day;

I’m sure I shall not pass again this way.

I want to give the oil of joy for tears,

The faith to conquer crowding doubts and fears;

Beauty for ashes may I give away;

I’m sure I shall not pass again this way.

I want to give some measure running o’er,

And into angry hearts I want to pour

The soft answer that turneth wrath away;

I’m sure I shall not pass again this way.

I want to give to others hope and faith,

I want to do all that the Master saith;

I want to live aright from day to day;

I’m sure I shall not pass again this way.
