Sane children.

I wake up to a shrill scream.

There's silence then a thud.

Mello starts to scream again.

I roll out of bed to go and throttle him for waking me up.

Some walls get in my way.

Damn, I'm so tired right now my head feels like a puddle of melted brain soup.

I open the door and a pillow hits me smack in the face.

I blink as I try to take this all in.

Mello is panting all rolled up in a ball of covers on the floor with his clothes on clutching a pillow for dear life.

Near is sleeping soundly on the bed.

"Mello, what the-"

"Just what are you playing at?" Mello cries at me. "I can't believe you'd do this to me!" He buries his head in his hands.

"Huh?"

"You wouldn't understand!" He sobs.

"I don't understand."

"THAT'S THE POINT!" Mello thrashes hysterically.

I step inside to room and tug the covers off him.

He screams and rolls onto the floor.

"Mello, I need you to explain like a sane child what the problem is," I state clearly, sitting him up on the carpet to face me.

Mello takes several gulps of air.

Poor thing.

I look at him with sympathy as he suffers for unknown reasons.

"You... y- you made me sleep in the same bed..." Mello stammers, "as... HIM?" he points dramatically at Near with a swipe of his arm that nearly takes my eye out.

"Mello, calm the beans, listen to me!" I stop him from being dangerous by lifting him up by the arms.

He's so small.

"Near isn't even awake."

Mello blinks.

"I don't understand what the problem is," I tell him.

Mello takes a shaky breath. "I feel violated."

I tilt my head.

L walks into the room. "Who wants pancakes?"

【L】

After I wake Near up we all sit around the table.

Watari has cooked pancakes.

L is drinking coffee and watching me with those big dark eyes.

I feel a little uncomfortable.

He finally speaks. "Did you sleep?"

Relief washes over me. "Yes... for a while." I glare at Mello who smiles sheepishly.

No one disrupts my sleep.

Apart from maybe Damian... but I don't know if that counts.

Watari piles pancakes onto our plates. "I must be off, the task-force will be at work already, I expect," he says.

L pokes at his food. "That's good, I'll be at the computer."

"All day?"

L nods. "Yes, there's work to be done."

I sigh.

"Speaking of which," L continues, addressing the boys, "I have all of the information I have collected on the case so far here." He lifts the pile of papers on the table.
