Chapter 18

"Jo!" Paige yells, running to me.

She helps me up and leads me inside Ricky's room.

"Did you do this?" Paige asks Ricky.

"Get out," Ricky says.

"No! She's crushed! What the hell did you do?" Paige nearly screams.

"I said get out!" Ricky screams.

"Jo, come with me," Ezra says, coming to my rescue.

I grab my stuff and walk out with Ezra.

"Follow my car. We're going to my house," Ezra says.

I get in my car and follow Ezra. He lives in a small ranch house.

"This is cute," I whisper.

"Thanks," Ezra gives me a warm smile.

We head inside and I lay down on his couch. My phone rings and I pick it up.

"Hey Paige," I say.

"Ricky apologized to me. He looks heartbroken. Tell me what happened," Paige says.

"I saw Mrs. Edwards on top of him in his office, and they were kissing," I choke out.

"Don't cry. He looks really sorry," Paige says.

"I'm heartbroken," I say.

"I love you Jo," Paige says.

"I love you too," I reply, hanging up.

I quickly fall asleep on the couch.

I wake up about an hour later to my phone ringing.

"Hi," I answer.

"Hey it's Luke. Paige told me about you getting cheated on by that guy in your hometown. Are you okay?" he asks.

"Not really," I say.

"Chase, Ali, and I are headed to The Pub. Meet us?" he asks.

"I'll leave now," I say.

I hang up my phone.

"Ezra!" I call.

He walks in the living room.

"I'm going out to meet friends. I'm staying at my place tonight," I tell him.

"Be safe," he gives me a hug, and kisses my forehead.

"I will," I smile.

"Call me if you need anything," he smiles.

"I will," I grin.

When I get to The Pub I walk inside to see them already there. I take a seat in the booth next to Chase.

"Hey guys," I smile.

"How you feelin?" Ali asks.

"A little better," I half smile.

"Look who it is," Luke laughs, pointing to a table not far from our booth.

"Hey Coach Johnson!" Chase calls.

I turn around to see him look at me. My heart shatters.

"Hey guys!" he smiles.

"I have to go to the bathroom," I mutter.

"I'll go with you," Ali says.

I quickly get up and almost run into the bathroom.

Tears pour down my face and I feel Ali's arms wrap around me. I cry into her shoulder for a good 5 minutes before looking up. I wipe my eyes and smile at Ali.

"Let's just eat. I'll do my best to forget about him," I say.

She takes my hand and we walk out together and sit back down.

"You okay?" Chase asks.

I nod.

"We're always here. You know that right?" Luke asks.

"Thanks," I smile at them.

I order a cheeseburger and some coke.

I look over at Ricky, and he's eating with another man who looks a lot older than him. Maybe it's his dad?

I see him look at me, and I quickly look away.

"We're heading out," Chase says as him and Luke stand up.

Ali and I hug them both before we're alone.

"My heart hurts," I groan.

I see Ricky and the older man stand up. The older man walks to our table.

"So you're Jo? My son has told me so much about you," he smiles, referring to Ricky.

"Dad can we please go?" Ricky says.

"She's a beauty," his dad winks.

"Nice to meet you," I smile.

"I'm John," he smiles.

"This is my friend Ali," I introduce.

"I have to head out. Nice to meet you," Ali smiles.

"I'm gonna head out too. Nice to meet you, and it was nice having dinner with you son," John smiles.

I shake my hand and he leaves, leaving me and Ricky alone.

"Can we talk?" he asks hopeful.

"My car," I tell him.

I get in my car and he does too.

"She came on to me. I swear. I pushed her off, but it was too late. You were already gone before I could explain. Jo, I never wanted to hurt you. I don't ever want to lose you," he says.

I tear up.

"I just can't do it. I don't know if that's the truth. Our relationship is dangerous anyways. Please just go," I say.

"Jo please," he says.

"Maybe one day, but I don't know what to believe right now," I say.

He gets out and slams my door. I drive home and crash on the couch as soon as I get there.
