My eyes were wide as they landed on the building in front of me.

The sign bothered me more.

MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON
KIRIKIRI-APAPA

I turned my widened eyes to Tomi's pensive face.

"Tomisin Adekunle what is going on?"

He tapped the steering wheel nervously, his hands visibly shaking.

"Tomisin." I asked again, "what is..."

"I think it's high time we stared the devil in the eyes and told him fuck you." He said cutting me off.

I stared at him for a few seconds, confused.

Then it hit me.

This was where he was.

I began to shake uncontrollably as panic and fear clawed at me.
"No" I whispered.

Tomi immediately grabbed my hands, "Kayla."
I didn't answer, my eyes closed in fear.

"Kayla look at me."

I did almost instinctively, "I can't go in there Tomisin, I can't face him. I can't."

"Yes you can. Please I won't let anything harm you. Not in this life, not ever. I will protect you. Trust me Kayla, trust me."
His eyes were so confident, that I calmed down almost immediately.
"This is a bad idea Tomi."

Tomisin scoffed, "He's just a man Kayla. He's just a man. I'm going to stop giving him so much power in our lives."

I stared at him, and was almost in awe of his courage and strength.
I could never understand how he could be so around at this point in time.

And because I adored him.
I gave in.

"How do you even want to enter." I asked begrudgingly.

Tomi pulled out a brown envelope from his pocket and opened it.
Wads of clean thousand naira bills slid out.
"The only way to get anything done in this god forsaken country." He said with a grin.

The first thing we noticed as soon as we got to the waiting area was the strong bad odour.
It was overpowering, I immediately covered my nose with my hand.
However as soon as I noticed the police mans sneer I quickly dropped my hand.

I tried not to feel too conscious as people openly stared at us.

A wailing woman begging a police officer to see her son caught my attention.
Her attire was dirty and ragged but she seemed not to care.
Her focus was on the getting the stubborn man to let her see her son, claiming that she didn't have all the money now but she would bring it soon.

The policeman shouted at her to get away, despite her pleas and my heart moved for her.

She seemed so hopeless.

So lost.

So desperate.

"Ah There he is!"
I jumped, startled at the huge booming voice.
A big fat man walked in, his skin dark and his belly abnormally large.
All the police officers in the room immediately stood at attention.

He immediately reached for Tomisin and hit his back.
"How are you my son! Look at how you've grown."

"Good afternoon sir." Tomi greeted, then gestured to me, "this is my friend sir. We would be seeing him together."

I immediately greeted the large man, "Good afternoon."

The man immediately grinned, "How are you my dear."
I answered him respectfully.
