Six Months after the Snap

Catherine flipped the pancakes on the griddle just as there was a knock on her front door. She quickly turned the burner off and put the pancakes on a plate. She walked over to the door to see Steve standing there, small tool box in hand.

"Morning." He said.

"I wasn't expecting you until later. I mean it's fine, I just don't want you to waste your whole day here." Catherine told him letting him inside.

Steve shrugged his shoulders. "I don't have anything else to do."

"Well, are you hungry? I made breakfast. I have pancakes and bacon. I know it's not super fancy." She asked.

"Sure. Thank you." Steve said.

Catherine pulled another plate down from the cabinet and made Steve a plate. The last five months had passed by relatively quickly. She had ended up buying a small farm about 10 minutes from the Avengers compound. It had a four bedroom house that was run down, but Steve had been helping her with renovations. The house got a new coat of paint in all the rooms and the kitchen had been completely updated.

Bucky and her had always joked about buying a farm one day, so she decided she wanted to give their child that dream. She had yet to get any farm animals; she wanted to wait until their baby came. She did however, go ahead and start her own garden. The only room she needed left to complete was the baby's room.

She was 23 weeks with their baby. Her bump was definitely starting to show now, but she didn't mind. She could also start feeling the little kicks. When she was 20 week she found out she was having a boy. She couldn't help but cry when she found out. She was going to have a mini Bucky Barnes. A month after she found out she was pregnant, Pepper found out she was pregnant as well and they were going to have a girl.

She was excited that her son would have someone to grow up with. Steve had been a huge help. Anything she needed, he would help her with. Bucky was his best friend and Catherine was his wife and carrying his child. They had talked about this when they were younger, but Steve had expected Bucky to be here.

"So, what's on the agenda for today?" Steve asked.

"Well, I painted his room last night. I just need the crib and dresser put together. Maybe a couple of pictures. The rocking chair already came assembled." Catherine explained to him.

"Anything else?" Steve asked.

"I'll let you know." Catherine told him with a smile.

Once the two of them finished eating, they walked into the baby's soon to be room. It was the perfect room for him. She had painted the walls a very light grey color. It had a two windows that let in natural light, which she loved. The rocking chair had already been positioned into the corner of the room and there were two boxes in the middle of it.

"I'm going to do the dishes. Let me know if you need anything." She said.

There weren't many dishes to do luckily. After she finished with the dishes she decided to do a load of laundry and then check on her garden. When she walked back into the house, she could hear Steve muttering something. She found him sitting in the floor with a crib halfway assembled.

"You look perplexed." She teased.

"I've jumped out of planes, fought aliens, fought in a war and this is by far the hardest thing I've had to do. I just want to make sure it's safe for him." Steve explained to her.

Catherine couldn't help but smile at his caring attitude. She could tell he felt remorseful about Bucky not being here. He was always trying to help her.

"I'm sure it'll be fine Steve. Thank you for helping by the way. It means a lot." She said, sitting in the rocking chair.

"It's fine. You were there for me when I woke up. You fought by my side and helped me when we were hiding out. It's the least I can do for you." Steve told her as he finished putting the crib together. "So, do you have any names picked out yet?"

"I was thinking William James Barnes." She told him

"I like it. Bucky would like it too."

Catherine sighed. "I miss him Steve. I don't know how I'm going to raise this baby alone."

Steve stopped opening the box for the dresser and looked over at her. He had never seen her so sad before. She had always been the happy, positive person. He knew she was worn. They all were worn.

"I miss him too Cat. You aren't going to be alone. You have Tony, Pepper, Natasha, Rhodey and me. We'll be there whenever you need us. I promise." Steve explained. "He's going to be loved, no matter what. Especially with a strong mom like you."

"You're going to make me cry Steve. You know my hormones are crazy right now." She jokes and felt William move around. "He's active today. D-Do you want to feel him? If you want. You're basically his uncle."

Steve gave her a boyish smile. "Why not?"

He walked over to her and knelt down next to her. She took Steve's hand and gently placed it on the spot William was moving. Steve jumped slightly at the strange feeling.

"He likes you." Catherine told him.

"Well, he better like me. I'm going to be around for a while." Steve said.
