"Y/N." I heard Erik call as he entered the room where my sister and I were being held. The blond smiled at me from the doorway before he made his way over to me and pulled me into a tight embrace before kissing my head. "They are here- to bargain for your release." Aethelflead stood from her bed walked over to me, pulling me to the side.
"What shall you do?" She asked me. I turned to face Erik, seeing him smiling softly at me, feeling my heart ache. "You have to decide." My sister gave me a stern look. "You know you can not go back once you choose, do you not."
"I do, Aethelflead." I reassure her. I turned behind me and held my hand out, which Erik took before I pulled him close to me. "This is what I want. I want Erik."
"I know." My sister breathed. She shot me a sweet smile before we both prepared for what was coming.
I had to speak to Uhtred- I knew he would be here- and get him to help me. Erik had spoken to his brother and Siegfried had agreed to make my price so absurde that it would not even be considered. We had actually begun to like each other once he accepted that I was here to stay.
The hall had been set up for negotiations and everyone was gathered round. There were three empty seats, opposite to them were the chairs where Uhtred and another man I did not recognise sat. Erik let go of my hand when we came into view of everyone, though I could tell he did not want to.
"Lady Aethelflead, Lady Y/N." Uhtred greeted us as we appeared. We both took a seat and, as Erik sat down, the conversation began.
"For the older one, what have we been offered?" Siegfried began, sitting back.
"Her father and husband have offered five-thousand pieces of silver for her." Uhtred's voice was strong and dull, him staring at the brunet. Siegfried laughed.
"The king's daughter and she is not even worth her weight in silver." He chuckled, darkly. "Fifty-thousand pieces of silver."
"That is a ridiculous price." The man I did not recognise spoke up. Again, Erik's brother laughed. "Mercia can not afford to pay that."
"She is the Saxon King's daughter, I have Men willing to pay that for her head." I winced at his words. He wouldn't hurt me because of Erik but my sister was not exempt from his brutalities. Erik noticed how uncomfortable I was and spoke up.
"Fifty-thousand pieces of silver. No less." He said, assertively. Uhtred turned to face the man next to him and gave him a single look before turning back together the two Dane brother.
"Agreed." He sat back a little. "And for Y/N, what price have you set?" Uhtred was more on edge this time when he spoke. I knew my father had told him to agree to any price that was set on Aethelflead but that he had not for me, because at least with my sister, only half of the wealth was Wessex's. Erik looked to his brother with longing eyes and Siegfried smirked.
"One-hundred-thousand pieces of silver." There was an astonished look on Uhtred's face and several sly chuckles in the room.
"You know no country in the world could pay that." Uhtred sat forward again. Siegfried was far too good at acting like this, I noticed. The man shrugged.
"She is valuable in ways you could not imagine." The brunet chuckled, looking over to his brother. "Is that not right, Erik?"
"It is." The blond looked over at me and couldn't help but smirk. "Our offer shall not change- one-hundred-thousand pieces of silver. Not a since piece of silver less." Uhtred looked at me with sad eyes before he sighed. He rubbed his head.
"Lady Y/N, have they treated you well?" The Dane asked. I knew he was trying to ease the guilt he felt over what he had to say.
"I am treated well, yes Lord." I smiled, thinking about Erik. It wasn't a lie, I was treated well. Erik made sure that I was warm and had food and that I had freedom to go with him down to the river whenever I wanted. He kept men away from me, always and he himself was kind with me. Uhtred nodded before he turned back to the two brothers.
"We can not pay that." The man sighed. Erik silently sighed with relief and I felt a wave of happiness. The negotiations ended there and everyone quickly made their way to eat and drink apart from Erik and I.
He dragged me into his bedroom and quickly closed the door before pulling me into a deep kiss. My hands clasped around his neck and his encased my waist, my body falling against his. His lips smiled against mine before he pulled away. He just looked in my eyes and over my face and pushed a strand of my hair behind my ear, making me blush. He rested his head against mine before he breathed deeply.
"You are staying with me." He sang. I kissed him again before he picked me up into his arms, my legs wrapping around his waist to support myself while his hands rested underneath my thighs, making sure I didn't fall. He sat down on his bed, never once breaking our kiss, before his hands trailed up to my waist, my thighs resting over his. Soon, we both had to break away to breath.
"People will notice that we are missing." I breathed. Erik didn't reply but instead kissed down my neck, making me sharply inhale. I still wasn't totally used to his touch and it surprised me sometimes when he kissed me.
"I do not care. There is only one thing I want right now and that is you." He answered after a minute. I couldn't argue with that.
The afternoon was late when the blond man and I reappeared in the hall, finding many of the men intoxicated or on the verge of it. Uhtred and Siegfried, along with the man I did not recognise and my sister's husband, who had suddenly appeared, at the head of the middle table, talking amongst themselves. As I took a seat next to Erik, Uhtred looked at me and raised his eyebrows, suddenly realising what they had meant by me being 'valuable' to them. There was no obvious signs of what we had done because Erik was a gentle lover and did not like to mark my skin but the soft way I looked at him and the colour in my cheeks when I had returned with him had been obvious enough to those who noticed it. My sister was at the table too, though she didn't say anything, nauseous from sitting at the same table as her husband, I would imagine.
"Lady," Uhtred caught my attention, "may I speak with you?" The Dane raised from the table swiftly and I followed, stepping away and out of hearing range of the table. "Erik, has he made you his woman?"
"He has, Lord." I stated. "And I need your help to assure that I can stay here with Erik until it is too late for my father to do anything." He nodded in agreement. "If I know my father, he will not so easily let me go-"
"There will be a battle." He insisted.
"I know." I replied. "It will take at least a few months to gather the silver for my sister's ransom, would it not?" Uhtred agreed. "That gives me the time I need."
"Time for what, Lady?" He interrupted my train of though.
"Erik and I are to marry- it is what we both want- but it must be before my father comes here. My father must not be able to bring me back to Wessex."
"Lady, even if you marry him, your father will not see the marriage as legitimate, he will still bring you back to Winchester." Uhtred attested. I rubbed the back of my head.
"There is more." I continued. "I have not told Erik yet but my father shall not bring me back to Wessex if he too discovers it." I alluded.
    "What Lady?" Uhtred pressed.
The night was old when the men left. I stood and watched them leave from the walkway, Erik's hands wrapped around my waist as he stood behind me. I couldn't help but smile, knowing that Erik and I would be safe together indefinitely. He, of course, noticed the rise of happiness in me.
"You are much happier than usual, my love." The man stated as he walked me back to the room we now shared. The men and women in the camp had become used to seeing Erik and I together, as we did not hide ourselves any longer, and they had begun to treat me as one of them- a Dane.
"You promised you should love me forever, did you not." I stopped walking. The man turned to face me and nodded. "And nothing shall make you love me less."
"Nothing in any realm could make me stop loving you, Y/N." He proclaimed, his hands cupping mine. "You have been acting different this evening, since you spoke to Uhtred. What has happened?" Erik asked, cautiously. I breathed out and smiled.
"Erik, I am with child." His eyes went wide. He didn't speak but pulled me into him, holding me close to him, tightly encased in his strong arms. I felt him breath against me and he buried his head in my neck.
"Oh, my love." He looked into my eyes. "I am going to be a father." He said to only himself. His face was stuck in a smile that he did not loose for the whole night, even as we both fell asleep, he was still awestruck with excitement.
