Emma
“What do you want to do for your birthday this time?” Mia asked me as we sat at the bar that was installed by my dad in his high tech – kitchen at our duplex apartment.
“I really don’t know” I looked at her confused, sucking on my spoon that has cranberry cream all over it.
Mia was my best bestest best friend of all times, even if it was wrong english to use bestest. I met her in collage, at the first day of class. She knew everything about Eliot and her schemes since I talked non-stop about it. So she knew what a devil Eliot was and how glad I was to finally be out of high school and into college.
Mia was my first real friend. We immediately bonded over anything and everything, clothes, shoes, boys, books, music etc. etc. and never had enough of each other ever, still to this date. It had been two years since our friendship had first started and every year, this very day, she would ask the same question time and again, ‘What was I going to do for my birthday this year?’
“Why don’t you invite your friend to Alexandra’s?” My dad suggested as he served Mia and me another cranberry pie. “I could whip up some great three meal courses for you’ll and you could have a wonderful birthday, honey” he smiled, his blue eyes excited. Alexandra was my mother’s name and the name my dad restaurant where he was the head chef, remember? The restaurant was named after my mom in her memory.
“She doesn’t have any friends DAD” Jack appeared out of nowhere his eyes fixed on his PSP.
“Where were you mister?” dad asked and Jack shrugged. He was hooked on to his play station like fish that can’t live without water and he continued to press the tiny buttons with his thumbs with precision and speed, as he spoke to us.
“I got one word for you dad.” He sighed. “Cheat Codes” he grinned and seated himself on the table next to me.
“That’s two words you ass” I teased staring at him not pay any attention to my remarks.
Jack was my younger brother, a.k.a 12 years old. He loved video games, like really really was crazy about them. He had the most adorable smile and the dirtiest blonde hair any cute guy could possess. MY brother was pretty cute as a 12 year old but it really didn’t matter to him, as I told you video games were his life.
“Great, now put that toy down and eat some pie” Dad spoke with fun in his voice and plated up another dish of his famous cranberry pie and served it to Jack.
He put the game thingy down and picked up his fork, hogging into the pie like a dog.
“JACK! Table manners” I groaned.
He lifted his face from the dish and looked at me with buttony, watery eyes and then smiled, with his mouth full, showing off the disgusting pink and red cream between his teeth and a half eaten pie over his tongue.
“EWW” I complained but dad ignored us.
“So what Jack said, is it true? You have no friends?” Dad asked putting his spatula down and removing his apron.
“No, I’ve got ONE friend! MIA” I smiled putting my hands out like I was presenting her and Mia posed acting along.
“Why does it happen that out of all the daughters in the world, you are the prettiest and you don’t have any friends?” My dad groaned walking away from the cooking end of the bar and seated himself on a chair next to Mia’s since there was no chair between Mia and me.
“Mr Carter, the world of college and high school is like the discovery channel. There are the tigers, lions and cheetahs and there are the turtles and deer’s and zebras. The higher end of the food chain always rules over the timid lower food chain ones.” “We” she pointed out to me and her “Are the lower chain of animals and we live in a happy world of our own, and even through having we just have each other, it is good to be invisible to the rest of the animal kingdom, this way the higher chain of animals cannot attack us, or eat us ALIVE” she hyperboled at the last word.
“Very interesting Mia but college isn’t the national geographic channel, I’m sure you girls can make more friends in college” He looked seriously at me.
“Dad you need to shave” I changed the topic looking at his chin and cheeks that were so stubby. It made him look gruesomely handsome which is the main reason why I wanted him to shave, we don’t need to attract more lady friends do we?
“Why? I get more complements with this beard than without it!” he frowned, touching his face and examining it by watching his reflection on the toaster.
“I like you shaved and so did mom!” I said as I put down my spoon and turned to look at him with full soggy eyes.
“Your mom loved everything about me and every darn look so go get ready for college now before I decide to drive your sorry butt to college!” he snapped getting off the bar and walking back to the cooking area, taking out another piece of pie for Jack.
“Oh no! I’m taking my car!” I jumped off my seat and grabbed Mia by the hand who was about to take another bite of her slice.
“Shit!” I heard her murmur as she couldn’t gobble down her bite in time.
“Eat it later we’ll be late!” I told her and she rolled her eyes, swinging like a ragged doll as I pulled her around putting on my last minute things before running out the door.
I grabbed my jacket from the rack, and then my bag, still holding Mia’s hand and rushed to the front door which was painted red. Jack and I had painted it over the summer, thinking it would look good for a change.
As soon as I got to the door I saw a white letter hanging from the mail hole in the door.
“It’s got your name on it!” Mia cried staring at the white note.
I pulled it out of the mail box and held it closer to my sight.
It read,
To Emma Carter,
Concerning Christmas Celebrations
From Raven High School, NY.
“It’s a letter from my high school” I stopped breathing and looked at Mia.
“We could read it later you know, let’s go to college now before the teachers kill us” Mia smiled, pulling the envelope from my hands and opening the front door.
The hallway of the building was chilly, ignoring it we ran towards the staircase, running down and getting to the parking area that had snow shoved into the corners of the entire place.
“Don’t make me drive today, I won’t, since you didn’t let me complete the pie” Mai sighed and I shook my head in irritation and got into my car, strapping in my seat belt and twisting the car keys, roaring the engine to life and starting to drive off to college.
I always made Mai drive my car but she knew if she would drive today then I’d end up reading my high school letter in the car and that would mess up my mood for the entire day. So that smart bitch made me drive in the snow.
