SATURDAY (cont'd). "Guess who!" All the way from upstairs, I heard Cam's voice downstairs. I was currently supervising Luke and my dad as they put together the bed frame that Luke picked out. I wouldn't think two grown men needed my guidance, but I was scared if I left them to their own devices, they'd never get it done.
"Can I trust you guys with this?" I asked, gaining their attention.
"Joey, we're more than capable," Dad huffed out. I sent him an unconvinced look, which caused Luke to laugh. I suddenly heard the stairs creak and I looked toward the doorway, expecting someone to appear. To my delight, Cam and Gabe both peeked their heads in. I grew a wide smile at the sight of their faces and I rushed to them, hugging Cam first and then Gabe.
"I can't believe this place is yours now," Gabe said just as we started to pull away from our hug. "You're like seven."
"Says the seven year old," Cam said as he bumped his side into Gabe's side. Gabe did the same back, but with a little more aggression and then a war began.
"Would you two quit it?" I groaned as I pushed them away from one another.
"Yeah, Cam—you're ruining her big day."
"Gabriel." At the sound of my tone, Gabe sent me a sweet smile, which caused me to chuckle. "Did you see Mom downstairs?"
"Yeah, she told us where you were. She also said that we just missed gramps and grams," Cam said, pouting. "They couldn't wait around for us?"
"They wanted to, but they had places to be," I told Cam with a shrug. "There are some boxes I need to be taken into the spare bedrooms—they're all labeled downstairs. And then I also have some that I need to get into the loft, but do that last."
"Loft?"
"The secret room," Cam tried to clarify once Gabe showed confusion.
"What?" Gabe asked, which surprised me. He really hadn't been here much—Cam and I spent a lot of time here before Gabe came around. But I was sure we had shown him the secret room. I told Cam to show him while I got back to Luke and my dad.
"I just don't understand how this is supposed to line up," Dad said in frustration as they struggled to get the frame locked into place. "Where the hell did you find this thing, Luke?"
"Dad!" I scolded, sending him a glare.
"I'm kidding," Dad said, "I'm a big fan of this thing! Even if it's about to be the culprit for throwing my back out." I walked around my dad to inspect what seemed to be the issue.
"Dad—you don't even have it locked in over here." I pointed at the place my dad had neglected and the three of us worked together to fix it. Once that was taken care of, the rest was a breeze.
